My most recent book binge kept me glued to the pages ALL weekend long. I got a hardcover copy of The Perfect Mother by Aimee Molloy as a PaperBackSwap trade.

It’s been a while since my kids exclaimed, “Look what I can do!” At some point in childhood, it’s common for children to transform their thinking into “I can’t” phrases. Wherever that mindset shift comes from, we need to change it back. Oscar Can… by Britta Teckentrup is a great start.

I always thought my father’s addictions were to blame for my family’s dysfunction. After his death, when my husband and I cleaned out his apartment, I realized that post-war PTSD played a huge role in his downward spiral. This sad discovery helped me to find peace in an area of my heart that’s always known pain. The demons he faced after Vietnam took on a life of their own. I wish my father had known Chandler Bolton from Delayed Justice.
The Color of Lies by CJ Lyons

I love it when books turn the tables on stigmas. In Lightning Thief, Rick Riordan made ADHD and dyslexia seem like the coolest diagnoses ever. When Luna Lovegood can somehow see invisible creatures through her wild glasses, I wanted a pair of my own. In The Color of Lies, author CJ Lyons willl make you start wondering what’s truly behind small talk and compliments. [Read more…]

Have a gamer at home? I sure do! My 9 year old son is shy in person, but bold and competitive when it comes to video games. Gaming serves as a good motivator for him. He immediately finishes his homework upon getting in the car after school; having all homework and chores finished is the only way he gets to play the Xbox. When V-RALLY 4 released, he was so excited to play this fast-paced driving game.

Sometimes a book arrives, and your heart just sighs. That’s how I felt about Words We Don’t Say. From the first few pages, I was in love. So much of this book was based on the way emotional baggage affects different people. Though the main characters were teens, its message was applicable to so many who suffer from heartache. It’s been said that if you don’t like the weather here in east Tennessee, just wait 5 minutes. It will change. So true! We can go from 30 degree mornings to 75 degrees at lunchtime, warm in the morning and snow in the afternoon. These weather changes can really take a toll on my well-being. Today I woke up with the shadows of a headache forming in my temple. I knew the only thing to head it off was the perfect cup of coffee. Does anyone else long to see this stream of ambrosia flow into your bloodstream?

Yesterday, we received news that one of my daughter’s friends ended her life. The young woman attended the school where I work; she and my daughter are in the same grade. It was such a shocking event. You never really know what another person is thinking — going through — and it’s so important to stay connected with those who are struggling.
It’s been a difficult weekend.
As I help my daughter navigate this type of grief, my heart aches for those parents who suffered such a devastating loss.
