Freedom’s Light by Colleen Coble

Disclosure: I received a free copy of the book from the publisher.  Post contains affiliate links; I may earn commission if you make a purchase. Opinions shared are mine.

You know when a store or restaurant goes completely rogue, and it throws you off? For example, IHOP becoming IHOb — how does a restaurant go from pancakes to burgers?  It’s not that the burgers are bad, exactly…just different from the expectation.  That’s how I felt with Freedom’s Light by Colleen Coble.  This book kind of caught me off guard, probably because I’ve been used to reading Coble’s suspenseful books instead of historical fiction.

Remember the game Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon?  I bet there’s a similar phenomenon with Sally Field if we took the time to figure it up.  Field’s 50+ year star-studded career shines with her sparkling charm.  Her memoir In Pieces allows the rest of us to peek inside her story.   [Read more…]

For us, church is an important family experience.  We like to worship together. My kids generally prefer sitting with adults during the worship service, too.  When the minister references Bible verses, the kids enjoy looking up the Scripture in their own Bibles.  For my 9 year old son, the NIV Adventure Bible is an excellent resource.  It’s very child-friendly and age appropriate. Ellie Claire Journals provide hours of enjoyment #EllieClaireGifts

Disclosure: I received product samples for posting. Opinions shared are mine.

When my grandfather passed away, his stories and memories went with him.  He was a quiet man who didn’t often share his thoughts.  The Christmas after his death, my aunt surprised us all with a copy of the journal he kept.  None of us knew he ever wrote in a journal!  He’d only written down a few stories from his childhood, but they were precious indeed.  I laughed and cried as I imagined my stoic, straight-laced grandfather as  a teen sneaking a smoke in the barn.  My heart swelled as I envisioned the nervous young man facing his first days in the Navy.  Those brief stories are irreplaceable to me.

Ellie Claire journals make it even easier to save those precious memories.

How is it that my little baby, the preemie who looked like a little China doll, turned 14 years old this year?!  It’s a tough world out there.  High school can be brutal.  Freshman year has already served up some trials.  My beloved girl tells me about things she sees, hears, and faces on a daily basis….it’s enough to make my heart break in two.

Hold your daughter close, mama.   [Read more…]

Under My Skin by Lisa Unger #ParkRowBooks

I blame Lisa Unger’s Under My Skin for my sleepless night.   Also, the fact that I read it on my Kindle app.  The little timeline down at the bottom corner kept me pushing the pace.  When it says “4 hrs 22 min left in this book,” it feels like a challenge.

Grown Up French Toast #NielsenMasseyInspires

Disclosure: I received product samples; opinions shared are mine.

My kids look forward to getting a “good breakfast” on the weekend. Before school in the morning, we do well to pack some dry cereal in a plastic baggie to eat in the car.  On weekends, though, I turn on the stove and make a better effort.  This week, my son requested french toast. It was a great opportunity to try some Nielsen-Massey holiday flavors!

Through the Autumn Air by Kelly Irvin @booklookbloggers

Disclosure: I received a free book from the publisher. Opinions shared are mine.

Kelly Irvin is known for flipping tables on traditional Amish fiction.  Her books often take place in unusual settings, or they’re based on unconventional characters.  Through the Autumn Air brings in an older woman as a main character.  It was a brilliant choice, making this book stand out against the rest of the Amish fiction stories out there.
