You never know how you’ll react in a bad situation until it happens.

In the book The Girl I Used To Be by Mary Torjussen, Realtor Gemma Brogan finds herself at a crossroads.  She is a workaholic mom trying to balance home and career.  The reader immediately gets the impression that Gemma doesn’t speak her mind, yet she’s an intelligent woman who is determined to get what she wants.  That sets up a nice twisty plot for this thriller.

Every time I pick up a teen thriller, I expect to be slightly disappointed.  There’s always the push-and-pull toward romance that is driven by hormones, and many teen novels read like an episode of One Tree Hill.  Lies You Never Told Me had just enough suspense to keep it unpredictable, and there was a clever plot twist thrown in to make it worth the read.

You might be surprised to learn how many students are considered to be homeless in your local public schools.  I was definitely surprised to learn how many homeless students attend the district where I live. Though resources are available, not all families want to receive help.  Many students feel like they have to keep secret the way they’re living, whether it’s spending the night in a car or doing without basic things like electricity and water.  Hunger is just one concern for these students.  These situations are so sad.  It definitely impacts the students’ ability to succeed in school.  Where I Live by Brenda Rufener takes a hard look at one young woman’s determination and survival as a homeless teen.

Netflix documentaries have been talked up lately.  Jar of Hearts by Jennifer Hilliard reminded me of the serial killer stories, and made me think of Stillhouse Lake.  Fans of dark suspense will enjoy this one!

The New Neighbors by Simon Lelic @Firsttoread @penguinrandom

Disclosure:  I received a free copy of the book for review; post contains affiliate links. If you make a purchase, I may earn commission. Opinions shared are mine.

Sometimes a mystery provides just enough information, just when you need it, and it helps the story to bloom a little at a time.  The New Neighbors was that type of book.  Like many other stories, it’s told in two alternating perspectives. This was somewhat difficult to follow, but served a purpose in the final result.
