The Falling – new paranormal book for teens

I received this book to review. The opinions shared here are 100% mine.

Aside from the Twilight saga, reading about supernatural beings never really interested me. After that series it seemed like the book market was flooded with books about vampires or some other type of mythical creatures. For a while, many of the books I read were about aliens. Recently it seems that the characters tend to be angels. I’ve read no fewer than four angel books in the past month or so, and the trend disturbs me a bit. Until now, I hadn’t really considered angels to be bad beings. The term “fallen angel” made me think of Lucifer, but I didn’t stop to think about his counterparts. Thinking about fallen angels makes me a bit ill. The Girl With Broken Wings series I started this week threatened to be much like the others, but to my relief it was more of a sci-fi book.

The Book That Will Inspire You To Give An Extra Goodnight Kiss

It might seem cliche when parents remark that “time flies” or “enjoy your kids while they’re young” as you start your own family. Only too soon do you realize how true it is. In Just 18 Summers the characters of each of 4 families go through these life changes as well. These characters are the sort to which anyone can relate. Butch struggles to raise his daughter after his wife Jenny’s death. I giggled at Daphne’s over the top nesting instincts. Beth fights her maternal perfectionist agenda as she gives up her children to adulthood. I even came to like Helen, who seemed like an old stick in the mud at first. There are some funny Meet The Parents type moments, too, that provided some lighthearted humor to the emotionally charged situations.

My son turns 5 this year and I’m in completely new territory when it comes to buying him a birthday gift. He typically likes to play with outdoor toys, like a frisbee or a bike, but I’d like to get him something really fun and different this year. I’m having trouble coming up with something, so help! I need ideas! We’ve done the Legos, the train set, and all the other typical boy stuff. Here are some things I’ve considered.

The Shadow Soul — do you get scared easily?

Disclosure: I received this book to review. The opinions shared here are 100% mine.

This summer our family visited the Dixie Stampede, where Native American dancers performed an interpretative dance to represent the early Americas. It was a beautiful sight to watch the dancers stage a mock hunt with live buffalo and a musical dance around a bonfire. In The Shadow Soul, we get a brief picture of what life might have been like in the Arapajo culture. Jinji not only believes in the spirits, she’s almost stalked by them. Hence the title “Shadow Soul.” Normally I don’t get scared easily but this book did freak me out just a little bit! [Read more…]

NaZari earrings from Indie Gift Box

Disclosure: I received a Bright Beginnings Box to review. The opinions shared here are 100% mine.

When Indie Gift Box sent me this package for review, it felt like my birthday! Normally I don’t like the idea of getting a year older but if I received this box every year, I wouldn’t mind at all. It was wrapped in the cutest pink tissue paper and had a hand-tied card on the front. So cute!

Indie Gift Box offers a limited number of boxes, which are available on a first-come first-served basis. They don’t currently offer a subscription option, although that will be coming in 2014. The boxes are theme-based; you can usually get a little hint of what can be expected by checking out the Indie Gift Box site. The value of the box contents is at least $35. The price of the box is usually $25, although I peeked at the site and saw one available for $15!

Inside the gift box was a little treasure trove of goodies. These are the types of items you might use to surprise a friend on a rainy Tuesday morning. A little bracelet that says “Celebrate” or a pretty postcard is just the thing to put a smile on someone’s face. There was also a little box of cards to stitch on, and a coupon for new flip flops. The blush was a beautiful shade which I wear daily. Then for a splash of color, check out these adorable earrings! I wanted to share something from the Indie Gift Box with you, so one lucky winner will win these earrings in the Sustainable and Upcycled Giveaway hop.

Artifact Hunters tour featuring Nefertiti’s Heart

Disclosure: I received this book to review. The opinions shared here are 100% mine.

Steampunk isn’t my typical genre of choice. I’m glad I made an exception for this book, though. It really falls under the New Adult Steampunk theme. Nefertiti’s Heart has a bit of Egyptian history thrown in for good measure, which was my favorite part of the story. There’s enough intrigue, suspense, and a few horror scenes that will keep even the most reluctant readers interested.

While the sun is starting to shine again, the weather might still be a little cool. You can make the indoors a bit more fun with a new Octonauts DVD from NCircle Entertainment. My kids really enjoyed the episodes on this disc. They request it daily to watch on the way home from school. Sometimes they need downtime too, and this is a great show to watch during that short commute.

Somehow my schedule seems to get busier around springtime. With field trips, spring break, and trying to wrap up the school year, we seem to be busy bees from sunup to sundown. Sometimes there’s not enough time to write that note to the teacher. Have you ever found yourself in the car without any paper, needing to write a note to the teacher? That’s when you start looking for the receipt that is blank (and doesn’t have a tampon purchase or something printed on the other side.) Wait until you see these. You won’t know how you ever got by without them!

I received a teacher pad, babysitter pad, and two parent pads. The teacher pad is absolutely great for writing a quick note. It has several generic statements on it, so I can just check off the needed information, or I can write my own note. I’ve used mine several times so far and plan to purchase a few of these for next year as well. One of my goals is to send positive notes home with every child. Permission Pads make that easy because I can pre-write the children’s names on the pads, then add a note as needed. What a quick, easy way to follow through with parent communication! [Read more…]
