My new best friend for my garden

Since I’m a teacher, I get to enjoy a few weeks off in the summer.  In the past few years, my gardening has been limited to some hanging plants on the front porch and a couple of tomato plants in Earthboxes.  This year I had a lot of extra garden space due to the construction of our pool, so I decided to utilize it by planting more veggies.  I took to the Internet to do some research on organic gardening and came across a garden blogger who uses fish fertilizer.  I have NEVER heard of such a thing!   I was fascinated by the benefits of using organic fish fertilizer and couldn’t read enough about it.  Neptune’s Harvest sent me some of their organic fish fertilizer to try and I couldn’t wait to get started.    Basically, this natural fertilizer provides your soil, and therefore your plants, with nitrogen compounds from the breakdown of the fish matter.  Nature’s Harvest uses a cold process to manufacture their fish hydrolysate.  Using this cold process creates a better product and doesn’t destroy any of the helpful compounds in the fish fertilizer.

To get started, I filled a spray bottle with tap water and added the required amount of Neptune’s Harvest.  After shaking the bottle to mix the contents, I thoroughly sprayed the leaves of my veggies.  I was concerned that the fish smell would be awful, but it wasn’t bad……no worse than cooking fish in your kitchen.  I sprayed the leaves of my plants and waited for a week.  Hooray!!  My plants seemed to really respond to the fertilizer treatment.  I had one cucumber plant in particular that was having a hard time growing.   Here’s a picture of the before and after……in two weeks, my cucumber plant grew this much.  I couldn’t believe the difference.   It even has two cucumbers on it now!

On the same day that I sprayed the cucumber plant, I sprayed my sad little hydrangea and this verbena plant.  They were all dry and crunchy. In fact, my husband teased me about them and said they were already dead, why was I bothering to water them anymore?   I just couldn’t give up on them, so I sprayed them liberally with the fish fertilizer.  Just look at them now!!  All kinds of new growth and the verbena is even blooming!

I’m planning to plant several blackberry and raspberry bushes this fall and I’m definitely going to give them a head-start with Neptune’s Harvest.

How do you keep your pet-friendly home smelling clean?

Clean+ Green products are designed to help pet owners and parents to overcome the odors in the home.  If you have a pet in your house, you know that the sweet fluffy creature sometimes makes it hard to keep the home smelling pleasant.  Kids can have the same effect, am I right?   So Clean + Green created this furniture refresher that is easy to use, safe, and effective on odors.  They sent me a sample to review.  If you’re a label reader like I am, you’ll be relieved to see ingredients like cane sugar derivatives, a proprietary blend of botanical extracts, hydrated cellulose, purified water, and a natural aerosol propellant (nitrogen) in this product.  That’s the eco-friendly safe part.  Now for the easy!!

One thing I noticed about Clean + Green was the size of the canister.  It was really big and we didn’t have to use much at all!   I think this can will last a long time.  We used the Clean + Green on my dog’s crate. She has a soft blanket that we wash weekly.  In the meantime, the blanket can trap odors and dirt.  I sprayed a bit of Clean + Green on it to see if it helped to neutralize those odors.  With some cleaners, the smell is so powerful that I have to leave the room for a few minutes.  Clean + Green has a gentle scent that soon dissipates.  It left the blanket and crate smelling completely odor-free.  Best of all, there’s nothing else involved—no washing, rinsing, or drying.  It was as quick as spraying it on!

In the end, I say YES—Clean + Green does what it says it will do.  It worked great on the surface I needed to freshen, and it was safe and easy to use.   Think about using this on litter boxes, sandboxes, doghouses, and more.  It even claims to neutralize skunk odor!!  I hope we’ll never need it for that.

Rocking & Learning about colors and shapes

A few weeks ago I posted about the Rock N Learn’s Letters DVD.  My son loved the movie and enjoyed singing along to the ABC songs.   We recently tried another Rock N Learn title called Colors and Shapes. As before, this DVD has become a fast favorite at our house. My son asks daily to watch “Shapes.”  The DVD features fun, colorful graphics that enthusiastically sing about the colors in various foods and familiar objects.  There are also games that engage children in critical thinking. For example, in one scene, children are asked to determine the color of  “the large rectangle.”  This requires children to identify the shape, analyze the size of the shape, then conclude the color of the shape.  My son loves to sing along with the video.  As we watch, I ask him questions about the shapes and colors that he sees.  This gives me a chance to evaluate his learning and level of understanding.

Rock N Learn has an enormous variety of videos for kids of all ages.  My daughter is entering third grade this year and I’ve been surprised that she hasn’t been required to learn the multiplication tables  I’m hoping that she’ll be introduced to this skill in third grade.  Regardless, I plan to try Rock N Learn’s math series to see if it helps my daughter learn these facts.  There are even videos on history, math, and languages.

When diamonds aren’t your thing, check out these gems.

My daughter is starting to really like jewelry and I wanted to get her something special.  Now that she’s old enough to be responsible for her things, a special piece of jewelry seemed like a good chance to celebrate that stage of her childhood.  She loves colorful stones and who can blame her?

Amethyst

They are more fun and trendy than plain old diamonds (which are my husband’s fave!)   Custom jewelry doesn’t have to cost a fortune, though.  I received for review an amethyst from More Gems and couldn’t be more pleased.  [Read more…]

On My Bookshelf: Reel Life by Jackie Townsend

I’ve always wanted to have a sister.  God blessed me with a little brother, but it’s just not the same as having another woman to bond with, a sister who shares your past and your memories.  In Reel Life: Two sisters on the verge escape to the movies by Jackie Townsend we get an inside look at the relationship between sisters from a dysfunctional family.  The play-on-words in the title is a recurring theme throughout the book.  Movies play a huge part of the sisters’ way of coping with life.   Although the sisters believe that they are distant and cold toward each other, the story would say otherwise.  I felt that Betty and Jamie were in fact very close, sharing major life experiences and understanding each other at a depth beyond words.

The story follows the sisters throughout puberty, college years, and adulthood.  As their individual lives take shape, both Jamie and Betty must come to terms with decisions made long ago.  Since their self-absorbed parents aren’t much help, the sisters depend on each other for support and encouragement.   I loved the way that author Jackie Townsend incorporated movies from the 1970’s and 1980’s into the plot.  Since I grew up then, many of the movies were familiar to me and this helped me relate to the story.    Overall, this was an enjoyable book.  Want to read the first chapter?   You can find Reel Life on Amazon and on the author’s website.

Author Jackie Townsend understands life with siblings, as she was the youngest of four.  Jackie has traveled to many places in the world and shares these experiences in her writing.  She is the author of several short stories.   She currently resides in New York.
