Disclosure: I received a copy of this book for review. Opinions shared are mine.

There’s a point in a reader’s life when she starts reading for others.  At least, in my life that happened.  I still read books that I love, but I also try to squeeze in books that my kids would enjoy.  Connecting through books is important to me.  Since I teach middle school, it’s also a way for me to keep up with books my students might enjoy.   A few years ago I read Paper Magician on the recommendation of one of my students.  Loved it!  Normally, I don’t read a lot of fantasy, but when I saw that Smoke & Summons was written by the same author, it drew my attention right away.

My instincts were right on this one. When my teen daughter saw the book sitting on the counter, her eyes perked up and she said, “Oooooh, can I read that?”  Bingo!  Luckily, I had an e-copy of the book, too, so we could enjoy it at the same time.

The book has lots of action scenes, mostly running away from pursuers and such, but there’s a lot of world building as well.  The fantasy elements stem from supernatural possession and references to the occult, though there are many modern social issues involved as well.  Human trafficking, social inequity, and theocracy play a part in this story.  Though there are hints of romance, it’s not a major part of the plot.

The two main characters, Sandis and Rone, reminded me of Rapunzel and Finn from Tangled.  Sandis depended so heavily on Rone; they were an unlikely pair but it worked.  Despite her obvious strength of character and mind, Sandis seemed so childlike.  On the other hand, Rone was all bark and no bite.

There are brief moments that mention mature content (virginity and suggestion of rape), but it’s all mild and in the background.  Nothing overtly sexual takes place in the story.  Violence is present, and there are darker scenes of kidnapping and torture.  Smoke & Summons could work as a middle grades book for mature tweens as well as teen fiction/YA lit.  What a relief to see a book that has a lot of action without profanity!  I really enjoyed it and look forward to the next book in the series.

Now, to outwit her pursuers, Sandis must put all her trust in Rone and his immortal device. For her master has summoned more than mere men to hunt her down…
