Last year around this time, I was introduced to Charlie Hernandez. He became a constant topic of conversation around our house, much in the same way as Harry Potter and Percy Jackson have been. When author Ryan Calejo sent me a copy of Charlie’s newest adventure, Charlie Hernandez and the Castle of Bones, my kids literally squealed aloud. They could not wait to read this book.

I pre-ordered the audiobook weeks ahead of the release date, and you know that I never pre-order. This book was an exception! My son asked me daily when the book would be ready, and we all cheered when it was finally available. My daughter (10th grade) takes the book with her to school because she can’t wait to find out what happens next. She also likes reading the Spanish phrases to see if she understands them.

We haven’t finished the book yet; we’re around chapter 27. Castle of Bones is just as exciting as book 1. Charlie’s humor hasn’t faded at all, but we do get to see a different side of him. He seems more mature and ready to face obstacles. Violet is at her best in this book. She’s in her glory as she unearths one mystery at a time. I just know this book series will be a movie someday — I can visualize it in my mind right now!

If you’re a homeschooling family, this series would be a terrific addition to your curriculum. It’s a natural fit with language arts (mythology) and geography, as well as an opportunity to incorporate foreign language. Likewise, middle schools should consider adopting the Charlie Hernandez books as part of their novel study lineup!

Calejo’s Charlie Hernandez series has bonded our family! It’s so tough to find a book that both of my kids enjoy. Every time my son says, “Okay! Can you please turn it on?” I say a silent prayer of Gracias a Dios that my son finally likes books.
