When I finished the book When the Crows Fly Low, a moment of silence was in order. This stunning book still flows through my veins! If Nicholas Sparks had written Legends of the Fall, When the Crows Fly Low would have been the result. V. J. Patterson’s book commanded my attention until the very last page. At first, I was frustrated, thinking that I already knew what would happen. Patterson was probably laughing inwardly, though, because what I thought would happen was the very last thing that occurred!
The two main characters, Will and Sarah, were young adults in rural Tennessee. If you’ve never been to a small town in Tennessee, you’re missing out. The community is like family…..and in many cases, they are family. Everyone knows everything about everyone. It’s hard to start afresh in a place where you made the news whenever you sneezed. Still, people in a small town are also fiercely loyal to their own. The character I most respected in this book was Sarah. She did start anew in the community of Doyle. She left everything that was familiar, everything that meant comfort, to make a path for herself. She didn’t define her worth (or her life) on a man. Instead, she trusted her instincts and believed in herself. I was impressed by her! Patterson’s words made the Lawson family, both immediate and extended, seem like people I might meet at the local Wal-mart. Good to the core, these down-home folks were salt of the earth. I’d love to see the story expanded beyond Will and Sarah, although I’m not sure I have the guts to revisit Doyle again. That’s how raw the romance was for me.
Throughout the story, country music kept running through my mind. In my heart’s radio, Will’s song for Sarah was Drunk On You by Luke Bryan. Sarah’s song for Will would be Mine by Taylor Swift. Like I said, the story reminded me of a gritty version of a Nicholas Sparks novel. I loved that things weren’t always perfect, sunshine and rainbows. Even when the whole thing got a bit too real-world for me, it was all good. Patterson made sure that I could sleep at night.
Don’t miss this book. I mean it! If you’re lucky enough to enjoy Kindle Unlimited, you can even get this title for free. So have at it. The time you enjoy in Doyle will be well spent!
