When Mountains Move by Julie Cantrell book review

Remember when I raved about Julie Cantrell’s book, The Feathered Bone? When I saw her new title, When Mountains Move, as a new release on Book Look, my heart leapt.  She’s one of my newest favorite authors.  I love the title of the book, and the beautiful scripted cover.  Mountains are near and dear to my heart.
When Mountains Move

In my haste to get this book, I missed the fact that it’s a sequel. It’s part of the Into the Free series.  When Mountains Move seems to pick up where Into the Free left off, and I definitely felt like I missed some information along the way.  While Cantrell describes some of the previous events, it’s not like getting the full story.  Needless to say, I immediately ordered Into the Free when I realized how much I wanted to know about Millie’s life before this novel.

Julie Cantrell’s style of prose is superb.  Her lyrical lines take on an ethereal form, creating a mental image that is both realistic and surreal.  Her extensive research is evident throughout the pages of this book.  The setting is just after the Depression era, and everything feels pinched — money, relationships, and even morality.

I’ve often mentioned the shift in Christian literature; When Mountains Move is a good example.  It’s technically marketed as Christian fiction, but it’s not evangelistic at all.  Any reference to the Christian faith is purely based on a character’s reaction to something that happens in the story.  There are some tough situations presented in the book, and readers should go in knowing that Julie Cantrell doesn’t tiptoe around.

Does this sound like a book you might like to read?
