Wondering what to read this weekend? Let’s enjoy the final month of spring with some good old fashioned southern books!  The first one on my list is God, Me, and Sweet Iced Tea by Rose Chandler Johnson. This devotional contains journaling ideas, prayer focus, and challenges.  The thing I liked most about this book was the unique perspective RCJ takes with the prayer focus. For example, on one focus day, we prayed for those with brain injuries and disorders.  There is nothing off the table in God, Me, and Sweet Iced Tea. From gossip to forgiveness, the author tackles those moments of everyday life in which God needs to be a part. This would be a lovely book to start with a prayer partner.  Share each chapter over cups of delicious sweet tea, and deepen a relationship while strengthening your others!

The Trouble with Patience - book review. savingsinseconds.com

The Trouble With Patience by Maggie Brendan might be predictable, but it’s a fun prediction to make!  Patience seemed like an old spinster at first, but she’s only 25 years old.  In our modern world, she’d be a young woman. In the old west, though, she’s a spurned maid!  I admired her determination to make her own way in life, not dependent upon her parents or a husband.  Her interest in lawman Jedediah was written in the stars.  There’s an interesting book-within-a-book factor with The Trouble with Patience, since she’s writing a devotional in her spare time.  I would have enjoyed seeing Patience’s devotional topics as additions in the book–as part of the chapter titles, for example.  The reader is rewarded for getting through the tense moments in this book by enjoying the sweeter parts.  If you enjoy a biting banter with your kisses, this might just be the book for you!

Now for something totally out of the norm, we have The Room by Jonas Karlsson.  I expected this book to feel more like The Matrix, with its odd premise that there’s a secret room in an office that somehow takes us to an alternate reality. On the back of the book, Bjorn is described as delightfully odd.  That makes me think of Monk, perhaps, or maybe Dwight from The Office.  Instead, I found Bjorn to be rather creepy.  As the story progressed, it made me more confused. I couldn’t decide if Bjorn was the sane one, or if he really was completely off his rocker and the others just couldn’t figure out how to pinpoint it. It’s easy to put these personas and labels on each other when we work together on a daily basis.  The trouble is, how do we manage it when one of us is clearly not like the others?  The Room left me with a bit of a queasy feeling.  It contains profanity, just so you’re aware. If you like a psychological mystery, this one might be for you!

    • Jeanine, I hope you’ll get a copy of God, Me, and Sweet Iced Tea. It seems like a simple little book, but it’s surprising in its depth. The meditations are thought-provoking, encourage, and inspire.

What a selection…variety. God, Me and Sweet Tea is an adorable title, and I like that it covers real everyday issues. The Room looks thought-provoking. Even the cover seems confusing.

    • Thanks Sherry for your kind words. I think you’ll like the selection offered in God, Me, and Sweet Iced Tea. Readers tell me they are relevant and practical to our everyday lives.
