Winter activities like playing in the snow don’t really appeal to me. Now, reading….yes!  The reviews for Shepherd, Potter, Spy, and the Star Namer by Peggy Miracle Consolver were upbeat and positive, so I can’t wait to check it out.

The book starts with a list of character names and relationships. This is so helpful, considering the often-confusing names of Old Testament people.

Despite the ancient setting, it’s easy to find modern correlations in Shepherd, Potter, Spy and the Star Namer.  Sibling rivalry and the desire for acceptance.  Uncertainty about the future.  Land disputes, ambition, and fatal flaws.  Sound familiar?   There were some dear characters who really found their way into my heart. For example, Gran-mamaa reminded me a little of my own precious grandmother.  Some relationships don’t change, even after hundreds of generations.

The detailed conversations were sometimes cumbersome to read.  I admit to skimming some of those, just because I tend to hate reading consecutive pages of dialogue.  It’s a simple read, though, and won’t require too much re-reading to understand the story.

Weighing in at a respectable 320 pages, this book is a weighty match for other Christian fiction novels.  If you prefer historical fiction, especially based in the Old Testament period, you’ll enjoy this one.
