Tried and True book review - savingsinseconds.com

Don’t tell anybody, but western themed books are starting to appeal to me.

Maybe it’s the rugged cowboy contrasted with the gentle soul.  Possibly it’s the idea of running free across a prairie with only the wind in my hair.  Whatever the reason, Mary Connealy does it right every time!  Tried and True is a ready-made series if there ever was one.  There was so much going on in the book (with lots of robust, rich characters) that I just want to know what happens next.  I can’t imagine that Kylie’s life really settles down!

There’s a lot about Civil War history that I don’t know about.  I guess I never considered the idea that women would disguise themselves as men in order to participate in battle.  The shenanigans get wild in Tried and True as the girls carry on the ruse for another project: homesteading.  Now, this is a nit-picky detail, but it bothered me that the main character’s name was Kylie.  That just seemed like a modern, trendy name that wouldn’t be authentic in a Civil War era story.

I enjoyed Connealy’s trademark humor in this book.  Her characters always employ a witty sense of sarcasm that makes the story more entertaining.  The plot itself was interesting, although the events seemed to be stretched to fill pages sometimes.  It was tempting to just pass off on a few chapters because the same predictable ideas were presented time and again.  The comic relief kept things going, though.  Saddle up and take a ride in this lighthearted Christian romance!

Have to admit the cover made me smile. I can almost see the girl’s hair flying wild behind her as she races across the prairie. You feel adventure and emotion.
