The cover on this book doesn’t do it justice.  I am one of those people who absolutely chooses a book based on its cover, and this is one that I would have passed over.  What a mistake I would be making!  Too Far Under by Lynn Osterkamp was a potluck of themes…..paranormal, psychological thriller, murder mystery.  I just loved it.

Too Far Under is the second book in the Cleo and Tyler mystery series.  I read this book on my Nook.  When my kids see the Nook they immediately want to play with it, so I was forced to read this in the wee hours of the night when my kids were sleeping so that I could be alone with the story.  I couldn’t wait to pick it up where I left off each time!  The author kept me guessing almost until the very end.   There was enough romantic tension to keep it interesting.  I really liked the main character, Cleo, and her way of dealing with situations.  Too Far Under piqued my curiosity about the supernatural and I found myself wanting to know more about some of the theories in the book.  Maybe they are real, maybe they aren’t, but Too Far Under was realistic enough to give me reason to think about ideas such as Indigo children.

My only complaint about the book was that the setting seemed wrong to me.  The story was based in Boulder, Colorado but it was more like a Mayberry setting.  Everyone knew each other’s business, they ran into each other all the time, and they were all connected in some way like the Five Degrees of Bacon.  It would have been more credible to me if the story was based in a really small town.  Still, that was such an easy part to overlook that it didn’t affect my perception of the book.  It did make me want to visit Colorado; I lived there for a short time as a teenager and would love to visit again.    I loved Too Far Under (it’s a steal at $2.99 for the Kindle, or purchase them through the author’s website) and plan to read more from Osterkamp.  In fact, I’m starting the first novel in the series tonight!

Like Cleo, Lynn Osterkamp lives in Bouler, CO and enjoys some of the same activities that Cleo shares in her story.  Osterkamp clearly considers her audience when writing and tries to satisfy her readers’ need for problem solving.  She has worked as a writer in many different aspects.  Read more about the author on her website.
