If you enjoyed Out of the Ruins by Karen Barnett, buckle your seat  belt.  She has a new historical fiction titled Through the Shadows. It arrived for review but, sadly, I didn’t have time to read it with the end of the school year looming. Thus my dear sister came to my rescue and helped me out.  Here’s Allison’s review of Through the Shadows. Through the Shadows

Through the Shadows by Karen Barnett is thought provoking Christian fiction. The plot weaves characters together in a symphonic interplay of redemption, rebuilding, courage, and love. While the story will be appreciated as a comforting read by fans of historical Christian romance, thought provoking decisions greet the reader at every turn.

Although the story is set in San Francisco following the great earthquake, the social issues brought forth closely parallel those we deal with today. The characters must decide whether they will do something about the social ills of the day, human trafficking and political corruption, or turn a blind eye to these issues to preserve their status in society. The main characters in this story find themselves at a crossroads in both public and private arenas and must choose who they will become and what following Christ truly means to them.

Through the Shadows is an excellent read that delicately weaves people from different segments of society together in a way that highlights the good and bad facets of humanity while maintaining the heartwarming feel of a Christian romance novel. It is a good read that leaves you rooting for the main characters to do the right thing, while simultaneously wondering how you can be like them in your own life.

Have you enjoyed a good book recently?

  1. Thanks for taking the time to review Through the Shadows, Allison and Dede! I’m so glad you enjoyed it. Isn’t it odd to think that those issues (trafficking and corruption) are just as common today?
