Thrifty Thursday: Using ham steaks as part of a meal

My mom visited recently and was really surprised when I pulled out a ham steak to make for dinner.   I guess she’s never served these before!

I buy these ham steaks about once per month.  They usually cost around $5, but go as low as $2.50 and $3 on sale.  That’s when I try to stock up on a few packs because the expiration date is almost always for another month or so.  We use them in soup and as the main entree for a lot of our meals.  My kids love to “paint” the ham for a Green Eggs and Ham dinner, too!  I’ll post about that another time.

I cut the ham into individual serving pieces; I usually get 3-4 servings out of one steak.  I try to choose one that’s a lighter pink and doesn’t have too much fat.  I use my pancake griddle to brown the  ham on both sides.  For this meal, I also used thin slices of an onion half that I had leftover from another meal.  I sprinkled the onion with just a little bit of brown sugar to make a little glaze.  It was delicious!   I don’t add any extra oil; the grease from the ham is plenty.   We rounded out the meal with baked potatoes and steamed veggies.  Such a quick, easy meal that’s also easy on the budget!

These ham steaks are also really good for breakfast.

I’ll post more recipes using ham in a later post.  Meanwhile, what kinds of recipes do you look for when planning your family’s meals?

  2. We often buy hamsteaks because my husband and daughter are the only two that like ham. It just doesn’t make sense to buy a large ham for just them.

That looks delicious! My parents served ham for dinner often when I was a kid. I do every now and then, but more often than not, I like to cut it up for casseroles.

I love buying ham steaks, too, for cooking and eating as they are (really yummy on the bbq!) or cutting them up for casseroles, or mixing it into egg dishes! Budget friendly and very tasty!

Oh those look so good! I always see them at the store, but the only thing I have ever done with them is to add them to scalloped potatoes before I bake them. I am going to have to try this!

I love to have ham steaks any day. I like your advice on keeping within budget and having all the flavor.

  10. I haven’t had a ham steak in years! I do love them, and they have just kind of fallen off my radar screen. I’d love to try this! I don’t have a set way of finding recipes, I like my well worn cookbooks mostly.
