As we enter the world of The Inheritance, we’re transformed by the historic connections of the story. This novel spans several decades and geographic locales. Its format is unusual, because it has a horde of one- and two-page chapters. This made the writing feel choppy and stunted. However, there’s a helpful family tree at the front of the book to make things a bit easier to keep up with. There is also a lot of back-and-forth between geographical locations. I found that I lost my train of thought after a while. The story moved quite slowly at first, but it picked up near the middle. I kept thinking that there must be some symbolism that I was missing. The Inheritance has a very classic feel. Fans of literary prose will be intrigued by the details that were painstakingly recorded. Though I found them tedious, the tidbits added much depth to an otherwise mundane tale. There were some parts that I could relate to, such as Maddy’s excitement about visiting New York City. There were just SO many separate storylines that it was difficult to keep up. While I might continue to read the series, it wasn’t my favorite novel or story.
