The Cellar by Natasha Preston book review

As mentioned before, I’m a little bit of a chicken when it comes to scary stories.  Ghost stories, I can handle.  Books like The Cellar freak me out, though.

The summary on the back of the book gives enough hints to make the storyline pretty obvious. Since this was a YA book, my naivete kicked in…thinking it would be a mild version of what my imagination cooked up.  Nope, it was nearly as graphic as I imagined it would be.  The Cellar has many emotional triggers so read with caution — it’s a traumatic situation with salt in the wound, over and over.  Though my daughter expressed interest in reading it, my answer will be no. It was enough to give me nightmares! She doesn’t need to have those images in her mind, too.

The Cellar has definite merit when it comes to crime fiction.  Tragically, the story is not unlike something you’d hear on the news.  In some ways, it serves as an important reminder to use caution and good judgment when traveling about.  I won’t be apologetic about watching my kids walk through the school doors anymore!  The Cellar gets big psychological thriller points, serving as a kind of fictional case study.  It’s hard to relate to some of the characters, but that’s kind of the point.  Their survival skills kick in due to their disconnected personalities. The creep factor is high in this book, and it’s going to be a while before I can get it out of my mind!

It was a little disappointing to see several typos in the text.  I was surprised that they weren’t caught in the editing process.  The cover declares the author as a Wattpad writer, so maybe that’s the reason for the errors.  It wouldn’t deter me from reading one of her other titles, though.

Do you like suspenseful thrillers like The Cellar?
