Have you ever seen a movie that would have made a better book? In this case, The Captain Takes a Wife would make a better movie.  It has a lot of potential for exciting scenes and well-developed characters, but it was tough to find that silver lining in book form.

The Captain Takes A Wife

The Captain Takes a Wife had a unique plot that could almost be a charming romance.  As Captain Harry Richardson headed for his new life as a preacher, he ran into a pretty young lady on the train.  Surprise!  She’s the same girl he was enamored with at the church revival.  And lucky man, she happened to be wearing a wedding dress and needed him to pretend to be marrying her.  Despite his seemingly poised, shy character from the first few pages, Harry fell right into character. Lucky girl!  Shaking your head? Me, too. It all seemed so far-fetched and unbelievable that it was hard for me to accept one situation then move on with the next stage of events.

Additionally, there was too much dialogue in The Captain Takes a Wife for me.  Every line in every conversation is spelled out, which made the scenes quite tedious to read.  Additionally, the cast of characters is so wide and vast that we almost need a list to keep them straight.  However, I otherwise enjoyed author Doris Durbin’s prose, and readers who enjoy a lot of discussions between characters would be in heaven with this book!   I appreciate Durbin’s effort to provide a suspenseful story with clean vocabulary for Christian readers. If that’s what you’re looking for in a novel, this one might be the perfect thing for you.

The end of the book is a wealth of fun for those who love crafts and down-home cooking. You’ll find instructions for knitting, recipes for interesting foods such as leather britches, and more.  That section was my favorite!
