The Bishop's Son - book review

I received The Bishop’s Son to review. Post contains affiliate links; opinions shared are mine.

The Bishop’s Son is a great follow up to The Beekeeper’s Son. Kelly Irvin graces her characters with such force and skill, they seem like real people. It rather felt as if a movie was playing! There were many dots to connect in this story. Between the love triangles, forbidden love, and teen pregnancy, many talk show topics were covered. The way Irvin approached it, though, was unexpected. It was difficult to read the sections about the immature parents, because I’ve seen firsthand how that can often turn out. Although I didn’t see how that particular storyline got fully resolved, the ending was satisfactory in a “sigh-worthy” kind of way.

There’s a heavy cloud of theology hanging over The Bishop’s Son. Also, I was confused by a few discrepancies in the story. For example, Leila was timid about asking Rory if she went to church because they (Plain) didn’t judge other people’s way of worship. That confused me, because just pages before, Will and Jesse had words over worship styles and leaving the Community. Perhaps that judgement only applies to members within the same Plain community. Regardless, it made me feel bad for Leila. She had so many decisions to make at such a young age; her responsibilities were beyond that of many adults I know. She was also a true friend, staying with the ones she loved even when their actions were disappointing. Leila’s decisions impacted many of her loved ones, so it was hard to wish for her to choose either way. The religious matters seemed to be of less importance than her feelings, which left me feeling conflicted.

The Bishop’s Son was a book that made me appreciate the choices I’ve been allowed to make in life. The people who influenced, encouraged, and supported me made such a difference in the way my future was molded. I hope to offer that same help to others in my care.

  1. Sherry Compton says

Sounds interesting and interwoven. Lots of tough topics that I wouldn’t have guessed from the cover, but it’s too bad that some things weren’t fleshed out well or didn’t seem to fit. Sounds like all-in-all you were glad you read it and that it has a good message.

  2. I love that you got so much from this book. It’s obvious the author found a theme that touched your heart and caused you to be thankful all over again for the people in your past.
