“Finishing your marriage story well is definitely within your reach, no matter what your history tells you.”

Whether or not you’re part of a married couple, chances are good that you have an opinion about marriage.  This perspective could have been influenced by many experiences in your life.  Your parents’ relationships, your personal goals, and perhaps even books and movies probably impacted the way you see that gold band on the left hand.  The great thing about marriage is that most people enter into it with optimism.  The tough part inevitably comes when the couple realizes that they’re no longer courting.  Instead, they’re in it together.  Some people have a fight-or-flight mentality when it comes to living with their partner.  In the book Team Us: Marriage Together, author Ashleigh Slater addresses some important challenges that married couples face.

Slater’s book is entertaining in the right places.  She somehow ties marriage in with random thoughts like the Olympic sport of curling, The Princess Bride, and jelly shoes…..and it works. There are also some heavy moments, such as the miscarriage the couple suffered.  She shares lots of personal business in this book, so if you don’t like knowing about the ins-and-outs of other couples’ lives, this isn’t for you. The memoirs get kind of tedious at times, but keep reading. There’s good information in those pages.  Team Us would be most relevant for newlywed couples, or those in the first few years of their marriage.  It’s also good for couples who generally get along pretty well. This book wouldn’t be a great resource for those who are having serious marital issues.

I liked Slater’s “Us Time” section at the end of each chapter. These questions are outlined and easy to carry in conversation.   The best part of Slater’s mentality in Team Us is the way she shifts her thinking.  She tries on her husband’s ways and sometimes it fits.  I’m guilty of thinking that my way is always best (because it is) but Slater realizes that her husband is a big boy and can make grownup decisions, too.  The next time my hubs orders Sprite for the kids at dinner, I might just smile and enjoy their happiness instead of growl about them having extra sugar.  All in all, Team Us is a quick read with relevant topics for couples to ponder.  Marriage Together is attainable.  Like anything worth having, you just need to work toward it.
