With the start of the new year, many people strive to eat better.  It’s a struggle, though, once we head back to work after the holidays.  Life catches up and, with that, healthy eating takes a downward spiral.  I liked the 100% Real cookbook by Sam Talbot because it makes clean eating seem attainable. Houseplants cower in fear when I come near, but somehow I am able to keep vegetable plants alive.  Maybe it’s because Mother Nature helps me out with rain.  Gardening is my favorite summertime activity.  Seeing my husband enjoy a tomato sandwich made from homegrown ‘maters warms my heart.  My kids love zucchini when it’s baked into sweet bread.  Our garden always produces more than we can eat, so we love to share the bounty with neighbors and friends.  Like I said, I’m not a natural green thumb.  So, my secret is this: Container gardening.

Seed starter kits - savingsinseconds.com

My husband has been bitten by the gardening bug.  A few days ago, he arrived home with a bag full of seed packets and a few of these seed starter kits.  Remember that we are now in a much smaller house, and no longer have a sunroom, so I wasn’t sure where he planned to set up his little production.  To my surprise, he planted the seeds right at the kitchen table.  He set up the trays near the sunny window and left them for a few days.  We were greeted with these beauties just a couple of days later!  [Read more…]

Cold weather is for the birds – DIY homemade suet cakes

At our old house, we had birds around all the time. It’s been sad to build our bird friend list up from scratch. Over the past few months, I’ve set out feeders and scattered seed, hoping to attract some flighty little guys.  This week the weather took a drastic downturn, and I worried that the birds would struggle to find enough to eat.  That’s when I remembered the homemade suet cakes I made at our old house.  This easy recipe is so simple, you’ll want to make it on your snow day!

Mason Jar salads make a fun lunch – book review

A couple of years ago, one of my students gave our team a basket of salads for an end-of-year gift.  The salads were delicious;  even better, they were assembled in layers inside mason jars.  I ended up purchasing more items from the farm where the salad ingredients were grown.  Inspired by the delicious salad idea, I wanted to experiment with more jarred lunches.

Recycling flowers: grow next year’s flowers from this year’s seeds

Last year we grew these gorgeous poppies and sunflowers from seed.  We grew wave petunias in pots that cascaded around the front porch.  Dahlias, zinnias, and many other bright and beautiful blooms decorated our outdoor space.   I thought about how I could re-use these plants…..then did a little searching to see what I could come up with.

Basically, here’s what you do with petunias.  The steps vary for other flowers, but the idea is generally the same. [Read more…]

Clear Your Shelf Giveaway Hop featuring The Four-Season Harvest

clear-your-shelf-january Giveaway hop -- savingsinseconds.com

Welcome to the Clear Your Shelves giveaway hop hosted by I Am A Reader Not A Writer. While this hop is a great way to share books of all genres, it’s no doubt a chance for you to try some new authors and titles!

At the Savings in Seconds house, we’re gearing up for gardening season. Last year I decided to try my hand at year-round gardening. In the hopes that someone else can benefit from my ambition, I’m giving away my personally purchased copy of Four-Season Harvest: Organic Vegetables from Your Home Garden All Year Long, 2nd Edition. While I had some limited success (my lettuce, spinach, and kale are still going strong!) I didn’t get around to building any cold frames or ordering seeds for unusual winter crops.

My happy plants are thriving — Spray N Grow

I’ve been posting all spring about the progress of my little backyard garden.  While it’s nothing compared to the mini-farms that some of my friends do in the summer, it’s just enough for us.  I love tending it and watching the plants grow. My happy plants are thriving and I’m going to share my secret with you today.   I received a sample of a product that has been really effective on my plants (opinions shared are mine).  My kids were so excited a few days ago  when they realized that the potatoes that they planted in February have grown into this big bush!

So what have I done differently this year?  Here’s a hint.  I spray, they grow.  [Read more…]
