Disclosure: I received the book to review. Opinions shared are mine.

Korie Robertson might actually be Wonder Woman.  Mother of 5, wife of Duck Commander Willie, and New York Times bestselling author top her list of accomplishments.  Also on her to-do list are public speaking engagements and volunteer for various organizations.  How does she keep it all together and still raise strong Christian children?  If you’ve ever wanted in on her secrets, this is the time. Read Strong and Kind!

Our family has been watching Duck Dynasty for years, and I’ve always been impressed with the Robertson children (or grandchildren…depending on how you look at it).   Anytime John Luke speaks to his grandfather, there’s a “Yes, sir,” then a moment of quiet while he listens to his grandfather’s advice about women. When Miss Kay invites herself to hang out with the Sadie and the teenage crowd, they don’t react with horror, although it’s clear that they’re not acting for the camera.   In her book Strong and Kind, Robertson shares how she raised her children to be honest, compassionate, and patient.   Clearly, Korie holds those expectations for herself.  Like her children, she always carries herself with quiet humility.  Her words hold that same weight.  She doesn’t come out accusatory and self-righteous. Instead, she puts the tools in the reader’s hands and makes suggestions for success.   She expects parents to act like parents, and that’s a refreshing change.

What struck me at first was the way in which Robertson sets a high standard, but it’s not unreasonable. It’s just different from the way society seems to view kids.  Too many times, misbehavior is excused by by parents who want to pass it off as a side-effect of ADHD, immaturity, or some other life factor. That behavior becomes habit and soon, the child may be acting that way at school, church, or anywhere else outside the home.  It can extend into adulthood, too. How many of us know an adult sibling who still depends on her parents for everything, even child-rearing?

I must say, I would LOVE to have the parental support from the Robertsons in my classroom!  By setting forth family standards (such as NO back talk, ever), the Robertsons taught their kids what would not be tolerated.   The children also know what is expected.  Respect of elders (without being asked) is commonplace, and that’s something that everyone loves to see.  Strong and Kind helped me to feel validated in my expectations for my children’s behavior, and helped me to see how I can encourage them to be godly, truthful adults. This book would make an excellent gift. Consider it for your next book study, or perhaps as a parenting class at church.

I could go on and on, but I’m sure you already want to enter to win the giveaway!  The contest is open to US/CAN readers ages 18+. Void where prohibited by law. Please note specific sponsor guidelines as well. Good luck!

I read the sample chapter, and as expected, I want to read more. I enjoy hearing about Korie Robertson and the whole family in general. I especially would like to read more about how they raise their children. In a world such as this, (and as a mother myself) I look for positive people. Willie and Korie are doing something right, and I will be looking for this book!

What a gr8 subject for a book! Having high expectations for your children is a good thing and I wish more ‘parents’ would ‘get’ that! Believing that young people are worth ‘raising’ and are capable of extraordinarily good behavior is so important! Thank you for putting it in writing Korie Robertson! Would love to read this book and share it with others! *smile*

I learned that Korie Robertson—with the help of her mom, Chrys Howard, wrote the book.

  24. It seems to me her main directive is to teach by example, exactly as Jesus wants us to learn from Him. This is the very best way to raise a child, as long as we remember that we have to walk in Jesus steps in order to teach our children to do so as well.

These are two great characteristics in a person. Sometimes it takes being strong to be kind, too. I like how this family sticks together and builds off each other and each other’s uniqueness. It’s Random Acts of Kindness Day, too.
