Do you tell stories about the past?

As I weeded through some old photos, I found this picture that I snapped in 2012.  We drove by as workers removed the sign for Bennigan’s Restaurant.  This was one place that frequently offered half-price appetizers; it was the perfect place for poor college kids.  I remember many a date or group outing taking place there.  We all pooled our money together to get a platter of potato skins, laughing and talking through the night.  When I saw the sign, it made me nostalgic for days gone by when there wasn’t a care in the world other than hanging out with my friends.  My kids wanted to know why the sign was important enough to preserve in a photograph.  It was hard to explain to them why I cared about an old restaurant closing down, but someday they’ll understand.

Do you share stories about the past with the important people in your life? As I told my kids about those fun times, it brought us closer together.  Sometimes there’s a “you had to be there” story, but most of the time it’s nice to hear about the meaningful events in the lives of those you care about. In this case, the times spent at the restaurant weren’t really significant, but the fellowship is what made that time so special.  With my stories, I try to tell my children how much it meant to have a group of friends who all loved and trusted each other.  Some of those relationships turned into lifelong friendships.  I want that experience for my kids. The first step is to help them understand how much I enjoyed those times.

  1. Yes I definitely share my stories from the past… although my husband is the real storyteller in the family. I think it’s important to reminisce!

I think that’s the best way to relate. Sharing things that are important to you and asking what is important to them.

Stories of your past bring up memories and emotions for you. They evoke those warm and happy feelings for you and your family. They bring you closer and will often get your other family members to share too.

  8. I can’t wait to be able to tell stories to my baby and she actually understand them! 🙂 Love this!

We have family from back “home” in town now. They just don’t us about our favorite little pizza shop there closing. It is sad and makes you long for the taste and memories.
