Salt N Pepper Soul Food — Johnson City, TN

It’s been a while since I shared a Tricities business with you.  Today I thought I’d show you one of the restaurants we visited last week.  I bought a gift certificate from Restaurant.com which gave us $25 off a $37.50 purchase.  We were in the area anyway so why not take advantage of the discount?

I checked out the website and Facebook page to find out that the restaurant opened at 11 AM.  We drove up right at 11, but no lights were on.  We circled around and ran an errand; by the time we came back there were at least 6  other cars in the parking lot.  The place was already filling up.  It looks really small from the outside but is bigger than you would think inside. There’s also a patio area off to the side for outdoor seating.

The waiting area has such kitschy charm. My kids immediately fell upon the purple lounge chair.  There was no wait time; we were seated right away.  The menu was full of all kinds of good things – chicken and waffles, shrimp and grits, and burgers.  I settled on the fish and grits.  The boys wanted fried chicken (with waffles) and my daughter got a burger.  While we waited, we enjoyed looking at the historic decor. There were records all over the walls, as well as black-and-whites of famous African-American musicians.  The ambient music played songs that transported us back to Soul Train.  We got an order of onion rings that were probably some of the best I’ve had.  Our server was excellent, too.

The only downside of Salt N Pepper was the smell. There was a musty odor throughout the dining area but especially in the restrooms.  I spotted a dehumidifier near our table and a moisture absorber in the restroom, so it appears that Salt N Pepper is aware of the issue.  Still, the wet basement aroma didn’t jive with the delicious food.  I was ready to leave but am glad that we didn’t…..look what arrived!

Normally I’m not a fan of grits but every so often they’re exactly what the doctor ordered.  I can’t say enough about the carrot souffle.  Total deliciousness.  The fried fish was quite yummy; my son devoured half of my meal as well as his own.  That little pancake thing to the left is a cornbread pattie.  This was really a great meal and I’m glad we gave Salt N Pepper a try.

The total bill for all 4 of us, plus an appetizer, was around $45 but since we had the gift certificate it brought the total to $20.  This was a great price for all that we received.   I’m always excited to try new restaurants and look forward to trying something new at Salt N Pepper.  Perhaps we’ll get take-out next time!

  1. We actually travel that way every November. I will have to check this out in November!

  2. Now I really want some chicken and waffles! Glad you gave a new restaurant a try and liked it 🙂

  3. Wow love the pictures. Look like a pretty cool restaurant to visit, love the Soul Train drawing on the wall. The food looks good but I might have left too due to the musty odor!

  4. Love the decor! The food sounds good and the help of the restaurant.com gift card is a huge. I try and check their supply every time we head into the city.

I have never had soul food, this sounds really yummy!

  6. I just won a restaurant.com gift card on Listia . So i will be using that soon. This sounds like a good restaurant to visit!

  7. I wish I could use restaurant.com Gift cards. They really aren’t an option in our rural area. I do love soul food, but the smell would have dampened my appetite. The carrot soufle does sound intriguing!

  8. Looks awesome! I’d love to visit and have some soul food!

  9. Oh my goodness, I miss living in Tennessee! I wonder if restaurant.com has coupons for where I’m at. I’ll have to check it out.

  10. I have a stack of restaurant.com gift cards that I keep getting, but very few restaurants around here to redeem them at. I’ve only ever redeemed one gc and that was for a dinner out that my sisters was going to. I noticed that the restaurant had a gc, so I bought one for her. She didn’t have any trouble redeeming it, so that was nice.

  11. You know, I used to not understand soul food or chicken and waffles. I just didn’t get the allure. But in April my husband and I were at a wedding in NYC – of all places – and they had chicken and waffles as one of the late night snacks (they were small, on a skewer and passed out by servers, so kinda fancy). I couldn’t stop eating them! They were so delicious! Now I wish I lived near you to try this place… Sounds yummy and affordable, too.

    • I understand, I thought it sounded gross. But my son got them and the whole sweet/savory thing was a perfect balance.

  12. That was a great deal you got from Restaurant.com. I have to go see if there are any deals like that for around where I live.

  13. What a fun atmosphere and yummy food!! Love this – I want to go!

  14. Actually I love grits! Love the train on the wall!

  15. I love trying new restaurants. But I agree, that smell is just awful. I hope they can resolve that since the food sounds great!

Looks like an awesome place. The food looks good. Nothing like soul food.

  17. This looks delicious! We have a local restaurant that has great food but similarly has that dingy, damp smell and I just can’t get over it so we never eat there!

Soul food with soul and a restaurant with character. You know when a place immediately fills up it’s going to be good. Too bad about the smell. Hopefully, they will have it gone soon.

I love restaurant.com deals. That restaurant looks yummy, I love soul food 🙂

Always love finding great little restaurant gems. And you cant beat that price for a family of four. Soul food is a personal favorite being from the south so I would love to check this place out!

  21. I have a restaurant. com gift card, but have been procrastinating on redeeming it, as the only places nearby that accept those cards are a Thai food place an an Afghan food place much further away. I’ve always been hesitant to try new ethnic foods! Perhaps I’ll look into that Afghan place, though☺

  22. Cindy Garcia says

You’re killing me with this post! The food looks and sounds amazing and now I’m so hungry! I could definitely go for that carrot soufflé!

  23. Some food I’d love to try here.. Soul food sounds so nice right now
