Sometimes I worry that my kids will grow up with warped senses of reality. I have a tendency to stretch the truth to make tasks more fun. For example, we still call parmesan cheese “Extra” at our house, because my daughter would never eat it if she knew it was actually cheese. I allow my kids to think that frost is actually a little bit of snow on the ground. Plus, my son believes in the Santa Key that will give the big guy access to our new house that doesn’t have a chimney. That’s why Sock Monster was right up my alley. If a Sock Monster can get the kids to put their clothes in the laundry basket instead of making my floor a cloth-slip-and-slide, so be it.
Complete with adorable illustrations, this book is hilariously spot-on with kid friendly humor. Little ones will laugh along with the book, imagining themselves to be frightened by the Sock Monster. The next step is completely natural, as they’ll want to go into their rooms and clean up after reading this charming story. I liked the variety of text placement in the book, and how the color scheme was slightly different from other children’s books I’ve seen. Sock Monster would make an excellent read-aloud for a classroom; it also sets the stage for introduction of household chores. Try incorporating it into your child’s library rotation this week!
