Sister Eve and the Blue Nun

Every once in a while, we get to meet a character who takes us completely by surprise. Enter Sister Eve, the motorcycle-riding tough girl who just happens to be a fantastic detective!  I didn’t read the two books prior to this one, so I had a little bit of backstory to figure out, but enough clues were dropped throughout Sister Eve and the Blue Nun that I figured it most of it out.

The story moves along at a steady pace, although it can be confusing at times.  Much of the drama happens on an internal basis, so the reader must try to decipher what the unspoken messages are.  For example, there was a scene between Sister Eve and Father Oliver in which there were several indirect suggestions made with the eyes.  Although Sister Eve worked it out, I couldn’t at all imagine what Father Oliver was trying to say until Sister Eve finally acted.   It just seemed unnecessary.  Also, the details of the crime were rehashed at least a dozen times.  Clearly that’s how detectives analyze a mystery but MERCY it got boring.

Otherwise, Sister Eve and the Blue Nun was an enjoyable book.  I liked the mystery that author Lynn Hinton presented, and looked forward to finding more clues in each chapter.  There was an interesting dynamic between Sister Eve and the Captain, and I was curious to figure out how their father/daughter relationship worked.  The inner workings of a monastery seemed an unlikely setting for a crime, so that played out in an unexpected way.  Finally, I wanted to know who did it!
