At Family Christian you can find all kinds of great gifts and items for the home. You might even want to pre-order Season of Fire, the second book in the Remnants series. This book has a great balance between male/female protagonist. It’s a good choice for middle grades and teens. Season of Fire is a clean read with lots of sci-fi, futuristic action. I didn’t read the first book in the series, so it took me a little while to catch up on the situations. There is a definite wall of mistrust between characters in this book. It would plant the seeds for discussion with your child. Ask questions like, “How can we tell who is trustworthy?” and “When do we draw the line at second and third chances?” For older teens, you could also bring in the topic of biblical references. For example, the author uses the word “sheol” to describe the bad guys. Help your teen look up this word to find out how it relates to the story. I wasn’t sure when or where the story took place at first, so I was taken aback by the realization that the characters were headed to Italy. This series would be ideal for kids who like dystopian fiction!
Words to Dream On is a beautiful hardcover book that will become a part of your family’s bedtime routine. It’s pretty enough to display on a bookshelf or coffee table, but you’ll likely want to keep it right on the nightstand. The illustrations are so lovely, with soft brushed colors and whimsical characters. As you might expect, the devotions are centered around well-known Bible stories. They’re told in a very child-friendly way in this book; I enjoyed revisiting the stories with my kids. My favorite part of each night’s devotion is the Bedtime Blessing, which is a little thought to dream by. Each story has a relevant scripture and thought to leave you with, as you drift off to sleep. It’s really a special way to end a busy day. Both of my kids took the book off my desk (on two separate occasions) and spent time perusing the pages before we read it together. I love that it caught their attention; I hope the stories help to hide God’s word in their hearts.
