Running errands this weekend? I’ve seen worse.

Our town is filled with runners. It used to be unusual to see anyone out and about before 8:00 AM on the weekends. My kids never sleep in, especially not on weekends, so we are usually headed out well before 8:00 AM to get some breakfast or visit the Farmer’s Market. When I started seeing people running on the sidewalks a couple of years ago, I didn’t think much of it. It wasn’t common but yes, I had heard of runners. When a co-worker visited me while I was on maternity leave and she had shed tons of weight, she told me she had taken up running. Okay…..why? I just couldn’t fathom why anyone would run by choice. That was four years ago.   These days I can barely drive down the road without having to stop because a herd of runners is crossing the street. Seriously, it’s really getting out of hand. I am a self-proclaimed couch potato and realize that my lazy ways need to change. It’s just that those runners intimidate me. They’re all sleek, shiny, and much less jiggly than is healthy.   They wear shiny cool shoes like the Electricity Boost Running shoes from adidas.  I might just be inspired to run if I had some cool shoes like this.   And here is the best part, adidas is offering free shipping through 6/14/13.  Maybe if I get hubby a pair for Father’s Day he might avoid mowing the grass in these.  Running is starting to be on my radar now that my daughter is getting into it.

A couple of weeks ago my daughter was running a 5K and asked me to join her. As much as I wanted to come up with an excuse, how many times is my daughter going to ask me to come with her to a school function? My days for that are numbered so of course I said yes. To my disdain it became apparent that my daughter has the same idea of running as I do. In fact, I found myself bribing her to go one more lap. She wanted to stop and pick dandelions every 5 minutes and I was ready to be done with the run. We finished the 5K after many tears, threats, and with a final payment of $2.50. Yes, she got paid to finish the 5K. I’m quite aware of how low I have stooped.

Do you bribe your kids to do things? What’s the worst bribe you’ve offered?

  1. I bribe with snacks so I can finish a blog post 🙂 I’m going to have to up my games as the school years come

  2. Rita O'Neal says

I bribe with a movie, a good snack, going outside and other small things like that. I only do it when I’m on a deadline (which is often). lol You are not alone. When I feel like trying, I’ll just threaten time out or something.

  3. lol, I bribe myself with mini treats so I can finish my work…hahaha

  4. I’m not big on running either especially in this hot Florida sun. I tell myself that at these scorching temperatures running may have more health risks than benefits, so I’ll feel better!

  5. I don’t have to bribe the kids very often. I do ask a lot of them only because they chose to not attend camp and stay at home this summer. Since they want to be lazy….they have to clean! lol

  6. Hah, whatever gets the job done, that’s what I say! 🙂

  7. Oh this is so funny because I always bribe with a special shopping trip or a treat! . It works every time, lol!

    • I don’t know why bribing gets such a bad reputation. How many of us would go to work without some kind of a bribe (payment)?! LOL
