In between selling our old house and buying our next home, we lived in a short-term rented apartment. It was above a garage, where we soon learned that the owners chain-smoked.  I worried for the health of my unborn child and was determined to move into a house before we made the second rent payment.  Although we had started the house hunt well before then, we gave up the “Forever House” plan and decided to buy something that would work for our growing family.  This house was it, warts and all. We moved in within 2 weeks.  We’ve had our ups and downs in terms of house affection, but overall this has gradually become our home. It’s the place where my babies came home from the hospital; this is where my kids learned to ride their bikes.  We put in a pool and planted flowers.  This house holds our hearts.  That all sounds lovely until you see my living room. 

What to do with this double room that has a confused purpose?  It serves as our family room, computer room, and library.  The adjoining kitchen area is a high-traffic area as well, so we wanted to keep things open.  I turned to Roomations for help.  We just purchased new living room furniture in July and needed expert advice regarding paint colors, furniture arrangements, and window treatments.  I also needed to hear once and for all that the red wallpaper needed to go (I totally loved it when we moved in.)  My sister loves to talk interior design and tried to help me but I was totally overwhelmed by all the options.  You should see my exploding Pinterest board!  I needed to see everything laid out for me.  That’s why Roomations worked so well for me.

First, I completed a quick style quiz to share my preferences.  This was actually kind of fun.  After getting my own results (Tailored Classic, fewer colors) I completed the quiz with my husband.  His results are shown in the photo above.  I wasn’t surprised at all by the results; it was like getting a fortune cookie that completely fit my personality.

Next, I uploaded images of my room — the same pictures that are shown at the top of this post.  After adding in some quick measurements and notes about the room, it was time to select a designer.  This was a really difficult choice because there were so many that I liked.  Each designer’s profile included a description of the designer’s personal tastes then had a few styleboards to view.  It was hard to click submit but I finally settled on Whitney J.  The entire process took only a few minutes.  Then I waited for the results, which came in only a couple of days later!   You know how those shows on home improvement networks show the styleboards that designers prepare?  I felt completely pampered by having one made just for me!

It would have taken me about a zillion years searching Pinterest to settle on this room design, which is perfect for my taste.  I love the gray walls (totally in right now!) and the lime green contrast from the pillows.  Whitney J also included links in the email that led me straight to affordable options for furniture as well as a link to the paint.  With the additions at retail price, the total cost would be around $377.  I know I’ll be able to find discounts and cashback options for these items, bringing the total well below that.  This process was so simple and I felt like I had a lot of control over it.  I was really happy with the Roomations experience and would absolutely try it again!
