What reactions stir within you when seeing this striking book cover?

When I received a request to review Rented Silence, I wasn’t sure if I could take the emotional toll of this story.   So many heartaches swirl around in the wake of slavery, and this cover makes it clear that the battle isn’t over.  Rented Silence is a book that stays with you.

The story takes place over the course of four generations, and mostly occurs in South Africa.  While I’m not entirely familiar with South African history, the basic themes of apartheid and oppression weren’t foreign.  The main plot of Rented Silence sounds quite similar to the US Civil War period regarding the inhumane treatment of slaves.  Some scenes in the tale are fairly graphic, so I wouldn’t recommend this to teens or younger readers.  As the cover states, true events inspired Rented Silence. It turns my stomach to think that someone actually lived through these situations. Following the characters through several decades helped to build the closure necessary to finish the story.

Some parts of Rented Silence were difficult to read due to the author’s writing style.  I had the impression that the book might be translated into English, because the flow wasn’t quite….. fluid.  Flashbacks and foreshadowing seemed to intermingle in an odd way.  The choppiness of the chapters and story line caught me off guard a few times.  There were also intentional spoilers given throughout the book.  I’m not used to seeing the plot laid out so plainly, and it was off-putting at times.  Some parts seemed so outlandish that it made the rest of the (probably true) elements pale in reality.  Still, the story has a really interesting timeline, and I’d definitely like to know what happened to the rest of the characters once the main events ended.  Above all, Rented Silence gives voice to the victims of slavery — both historically and modern-day.  The slavery facts at the end of the novel really opened my eyes to how prevalent slavery is today.  It’s terrifying to imagine, yet it’s a reality we must face head-on.  I hope that Rented Silence brings awareness to the very real problem of human trafficking.

Although the topic isn’t necessary sweetness, it is quite necessary to shed light on this real-world subject.  Would you be interested to read Rented Silence?
