In sickness and health has been a strong reminder of marriage vows in my house. My husband has near-constant bouts with kidney stones, which are debilitating for him.  He’s a tough guy and usually goes along with life which has spoiled me! He typically soldiers on, despite the agonizing pain, but this one had him truly incapacitated. On the night before my 41st birthday, he was struggling with the decision to go to the ER.  He decided to try to sleep and see if the kidney stone would move while he rested.   Our children were invited to spend the night with my sister, and I waited out the kidney stone!  I picked up my copy of Precious in His Sight around 10 PM.  When I closed the final page at 2 AM, my heart was stunned.  Admonished. Changed.

Precious In His Sight

Once in a while, we meet a character who embodies true love for others.  In the new novel Precious in His Sight, author Karen Pashley created such a person in Sugar Brennan.

Precious In His Sight gives us a look at the breakdown of a marriage. The cookie cutter family, nice house, stay at home mom (Sugar), dad (Clay) with a successful career built from the ground up.  It’s all there.  The first few chapters has Clay buying a phenomenal Tiffany’s bracelet for Sugar, to celebrate their anniversary.  What a guy!  Unfortunately, things aren’t always peaches and cream in the Brennan house.  Sugar’s eyes are opened to her husband’s infidelity, and she has some tough decisions to make.  We get to see the situation from many different angles – the broken couple, their kids, even the other woman.  The controversial views held in the novel are natural conflicts that could happen to anyone.  It has a Christian flair, but only as part of the Southern heritage that Sugar comes from.  It’s truly a book that could reach anyone.

I admired Sugar’s support network.  They had tremendous loving, genuine concern for both Sugar AND Clay.  It wasn’t the no-good-cheating-man approach that I am used to seeing (and, unfortunately, have participated in myself).  In this way, I could understand how Sugar came to define the term “selfless love” to the end.  While I don’t know that I could handle things the way she did, I’d like to think that I’d display grace and class.   Even though my marriage hasn’t been faced with this particular obstacle, we got through that kidney stone. My husband was feeling a lot better this morning, and I made it through another “sickness” struggle.

My biggest complaint about Precious in His Sight was the caption at the top of the book’s cover.  I feel that it gave everything away!  So DON’T LOOK AT IT.   Hear me???  🙂 Just go straight to the first page of the book. Be sure you give yourself a solid window to read because you won’t want to put it down!

I had a few cheating husbands and the only thing I learned is to not get married again. It would be nice to get a different perspective. Mine only worked for me.
