Have you ever visited a place and wished you could take everyone you loved there, to share the experience? That’s how I felt about Parrot Mountain. I saved this review for last because it’s the one that most surprised me. We’ve driven by the signs for Parrot Mountain many times during our trips to Dollywood. I’ve never really considered going there, although I’m not sure why. Perhaps because I hadn’t heard anything about it? What a shame!! This was one of our favorite attractions of the #PFTitanicFAM trip. We had so many good laughs while we were there. I can’t wait to visit again!

Parrot Mountain is surprisingly simple to find. Just drive as though you’re headed to Dollywood and continue past the Splash Country entrance. There are many signs directing you to Parrot Mountain along the way; you can’t miss it. It’s literally on top of a mountain—we drove nearly straight up as we headed to the “Garden of Eden.” There were even pearly gates to welcome us.

I loved the decor. Pumpkins, flowers, and hay bales were everywhere to greet us. As soon as we opened the car doors in the parking lot, we could hear the birds calling us. They were literally everywhere on perches, just watching us come in. This place with all the colors and sounds of nature truly reminded me of God’s wondrous imagination.

As we followed the trail our eyes drifted up, down, and all around. The little details like a parrot-mosaic stepping stone and a trailing vine made the entire experience just beautiful. We sat down on the benches and prayed by the fountains. I took so many photos of my kids that they begged me to stop. I just couldn’t get enough. One of the other guests looked as though she might be battling cancer; she was visiting with a gentleman. The two of them were laughing as one of the birds interacted with them. I could tell that Parrot Mountain was therapeutic for her. I prayed for her healing and that she might receive a measure of comfort during her visit. She sure looked happy while she was talking with the birds.

Our favorite part of the visit was the opportunity to feed the birds. There are actually two places where you can do this. The “Lory” room requires a $2 ticket. You’ll receive a tiny cup of nectar which the birds sip out of your hand. If you do this, be prepared to be swarmed by birds the second you walk into the screened area. This experience was terrifying for my son (4 years old) and I wouldn’t do that again until he was a little older. My daughter, on the other hand, loved it. It caught her off guard at first but she delighted in having the birds sit on her shoulder and on her hand.

The second area where we fed the birds was in a small semi-enclosed area where birds are sitting on perches. They have the birds separated by size; children feed the birds on the smaller orange perches. I really liked the way this was organized. For only a quarter, we were able to get enough birdseed to feed several birds. This was perfect for my children and we came back again before we left. The birds are very well-adjusted and didn’t mind even being petted by my kids. Several birds talked with us, saying “I love you” and “Hello.” The staff at Parrot Mountain is so helpful and friendly. One man helped my kids to hold the birds. My daughter even held this bird, Indigo, like a little baby! Indigo also gave cheek kisses which was so very sweet. I could tell that the birds are very happy at Parrot Mountain. The staff member told me that they have over 600 birds, which they rotate so that the birds also have time to rest. He said that the birds really enjoy being in the fresh air, sunshine, and interacting with the public. I learned that many of the birds at Parrot Mountain have been rescued or are donated by those who cannot properly care for them. In fact, Parrot Mountain even has its own foundation dedicated to helping those birds.
