On My Bookshelf: Whispers on the Dock

Summers in Nantucket sounds lovely, don’t they? What if you owned a bed and breakfast and every morning you were surrounded by the breathtaking shoreline, a cottage garden, and the glory of living on one of the most beautiful islands in the world? I can only imagine what it must be like. When I received Whispers on the Dock by Evangeline Kelley to review, it was a happy moment because this book makes it so easy to imagine that beach scenario. The first two books in the Misty Harbor Inn series were wonderful; I stayed up late into the night to read them. As I clutched Whispers on the Dock and savored every page, it reminded me of the dear characters that I’ve grown to love.

If you haven’t read the first two books in this series, you’ll want to get caught up before reading this one. Although it could probably be read independently of the other two, based on the unique storyline in this novel, it’s so helpful to have some background information that’s provided in the first two books. You can enter to win the set by checking the information below! Just as I enjoy watching a miniseries on television, it’s so rewarding to read a series. Getting to know the characters is an important part of reading for me. Also, the books seem to focus on a different character (sister) each time. I love how Whispers on the Dock really makes each character seem real. My sister-in-law read this book first and commented on the graceful way that spirituality is woven into the story. Rather than being overdone, the faith of each character is not at all ostentatious. She also mentioned that the rather boring book covers of these books are rather misleading. I agree with her, although I can’t really put my finger on it. Possibly the book covers are meant to appeal to a different age demographic than she and I belong to, in which case the cover is probably perfect. Such a cosmetic point that doesn’t take away from the depth of the book. This story has some elements of mystery as well as comedy. I’m a bit concerned that this book might be the wrap-up of the series. I just don’t want it to end. The series is like a broken-in pair of jeans that fits just right. As I read I experienced a rare combination of predictable surprise. Don’t you just love books like that?
