I haven’t really been a dieter in the past. I used to have a “normal” weight of 115. Regardless of what I ate, my weight stayed pretty constant. As life went on and I had more stress, the weight started to pad on my body little by little. Five pounds didn’t seem like a big deal until I had ignored the five pounds every year for five years. About ten years ago my husband and I decided to trim ourselves up. We exercised, ate right, and focused on living a healthier lifestyle. Around that time, I stopped at a small boutique that I hadn’t visited in a while. The owner, who I had known for years, was stunned when she saw me. She said, “you’ve lost a whole person!” Until then, I didn’t realize how much weight I had gained. I knew I was heavier than I needed to be, but the change didn’t seem drastic.

Fast forward ten years and two kids later. The weight is back on with a vengeance. I have been through rounds of steroids for medical conditions. My body is as stocky as a workhorse, with thick thighs and a couple of chins. My stomach hasn’t been tight since my c-sections. I get so exhausted during the day that I feel like I might fall asleep if I sit down. That’s why I was so interested in reading The Fast Metabolism Diet. The days of weighing 115 pounds and eating without guilt seem like another life.

Lose up to 20 pounds in 28 days? Sounds like a snake oil salesman’s trick, doesn’t it? The Fast Metabolism Diet: Eat More Food and Lose More Weight by Haylie Pomroy, who claims to be the metabolism whisperer, is supposed to give the reader a surefire way to experience significant weight loss in as little as four weeks. Once upon a time my body had a pretty healthy metabolism. I have always heard that metabolism slows as a person ages, and maybe I just adopted the excuse. At any rate, my metabolism is at a slow simmer right now. Let me also factor in the lazy part. It’s summer and I don’t want to waste any precious summer seconds by counting calories. I’m not really thrilled about writing in a food journal. So can Haylie do anything with a lowly chub like me?

She promises that she can if I follow her commandments.  According to Pomroy, the liver is a major player in the metabolism game. That’s strike one for me since my liver is a lemon. However, it was also a bonus for me because I knew that taking care of my liver, feeding it good foods, would be an important part of the plan. She goes on to explain the kind of blood tests results one should look for in a work up. There are a few mild expletives thrown in every once in a while….enough to catch my attention but not so bad that I stopped reading. Thinking about my bloodwork made me almost want to cuss, too.

The plan seems seriously simple to follow. There are no super long stretches, so it doesn’t get old. By the third day I can do something new. The downfall is that the portion sizes aren’t really spelled out the way I had hoped until you get to page 105 and again in the recipe section. I need this in poster form for my fridge. Maybe it is on a website somewhere? I need to check it out. Additionally, my doctor advised me not to lose more than one pound a week. I’m concerned about how this might shock my body, causing further damage. Those readers who are in excellent health may not need to worry about that. The list of foods from which to choose is quite extensive! I loved that Pomroy encourages organic choices and nitrate-free meats. This would be my choice anyway, but it validated some of my reasons for going that route. The recipes are surprisingly simple, using normal ingredients and appliances like the slow cooker. The meals are filled with good stuff like brown rice, lean turkey, and beans. Those are foods I would choose anyway; it’s just nice to know how to get them to work together.  I tried it off and on during the months of April and May but just found myself falling by the wayside.  Granted, I didn’t get to this point in my pear-shapedness by having the best self-discipline.  My biggest excuse is that school is crazy busy during the end of the year.   I don’t think this is a particularly difficult diet to follow.  On the contrary, the recommended foods are easily acquired and very affordable.  It’s just that I had too many other irons in the fire at that point.

Now that it’s June and I have more time on my hands, I am ready to take the plunge.   I can really commit to it this month (and maybe July too) because it will be easier to get the recipes planned earlier in the week.  My newfound resolve is not just because of the weight loss I hope for, but also because this seems like a great way to help heal my liver. What do you think about the fast metabolism diet? Would you be willing to give it a try?

  1. I have heard nothing but good things about this diet. I really could use to drop a few pounds myself. I may look into this to see if it would work for me. Good luck to you keep us posted on how you do!!

  2. Looks like a great diet. I’ve never been on a diet but I hear that having a fast metabolism, or even following a diet that creates one, is a great way to go. Good luck!

  3. I’ve heard a few others mention this diet around the blogsphere. I have such a difficult time sticking to any “diet” but I may have to check this one out. Good luck to you.

  4. I guess it depends on whether you do well follow a strict regimen or not. I’ve never been one to stick with those for long, but that’s just me.

  5. Sounds interesting, but I would definitely need to read the book to get a good understanding of the science behind this diet.

I have never heard of this diet but anything to wake up my metabolism is worth looking into. It sounds like something I would like. I love carbs and fruit so that’s not a problem with me and proteins and veggies, yummy. Sounds like a pretty good plan to me.

If it works, I’m on board!

  8. Michelle Knopp says

I should try this. I just had a baby 7 weeks ago, but am nursing so I need to find a healthy way to diet. I would probably need to modify it to make sure I’m getting enough calories to support milk production.
