The book I want to share with you this week is The Fall by Chana Keefer.
As I said last week, Christian fiction is no longer a sugar-coated sticky sweet affair.
The genre is now tough and gritty, facing the real issues of Christian moms, dads, families, and sometimes rocking the core of faith.
The Fall is an excellent example of such a book.  In fact, I would recommend it even (maybe especially?) to those who are not believers because it is a fantastic read for virtually anyone.
The basic premise of the book is the fall of Lucifer.  He was given the gifts of persuasion and one of the favorites of Heaven.  Once power became more important to him than Adonai, Lucifer turned those talents against the Lord.  The book has so many unexpected twists that I found myself forgetting that the book was about Lucifer, though.  As it should be, I instead focused on the glorious forgiveness and grace of God.  But the book still isn’t about peachy keen moments.  It gets to the heart of the matter, exposing those awful moments when both celestials and humans failed God and yet, as always, God loved and forgave.  Oh my, this is an experience you need to be there for.  Click here to read the first few pages!
The reason I wanted to read this book is simple.  My daughter is 8 years old and has been asking me a lot of tough questions, questions that I didn’t know how to answer.  First and foremost, she is struggling with the foundation of her faith, trying to figure out how God could love EVERYONE if “the devil” is so bad.  Basically, does God love Lucifer?   I honestly don’t know how to answer that.  I thought The Fall might help give me some insight; even though it’s fiction, it could give me an idea to work with.  Don’t be fooled, The Fall isn’t a happy-ending, tied-up-in-a-neat-bow kind of book.  Think about it, is that how the world is?  You might not like what you hear. Still, it seems that the book opened my eyes to so many other questions and made me look with a critical eye into my own heart!  Which, in this case, is a good thing.   It has deepened my faith in God and helped me to focus on the thing that matters most—God loves even me.
