Old Mother Hubbard had the right idea

I haven’t done a “real” grocery trip in weeks. I don’t have an official stockpile, either. It all kind of happened out of laziness mixed with not wanting to spend money (remember that tight budget we are trying to stick to?) At first, I just didn’t have time to go to the store so I scrounged around to make meals from things that we had in the freezer. When school let out for the summer, I kind of took a break and decided not to leave the house. That meant another few days of pantry raiding. The last of the chicken tenders or a few fish sticks that might have otherwise gone to waste were finally used up. Some nights I went to the garden to supplement with salads or brighten up roasted potatoes with a handful of chopped broccoli. Somewhere I heard the term YOYO night which stands for You’re On Your Own. That went over much better than Leftovers Night with the kids. We made a game out of polishing off the leftovers in order to clean out the fridge.   There are over 400 recipes in my “Recipes to Try” Pinterest board, but making most of them would require me to go to the store.  Right now I just don’t want to.  We are going to clean out the fridge by eating every last bite.  Well, within reason.  If the food waves at me when I open the lid, it’s probably time to throw that one out.

My family has survived pretty well. We have finished off the hamburger buns (made Nutella sandwiches) and we’re sick of having breakfast for supper. In the end, I figured out that Old Mother Hubbard had the right idea. Her cupboards weren’t empty because of financial reasons. She just had a month like mine.

When you are too tired, lazy, or broke to head to the store for supper ingredients, what’s your backup plan?

I look and see what I have, then I get on the internet and look for a recipe. There are so many recipes out there, so I can always find something to make with whatever is at hand. Plus, my kids love the novelty.

  2. Great plan! Some times I just don’t feel like going to the store! My hubby and I in university made an amazing dinner coined rice surprise from left overs and things found in the cupboard. one of our favourite meals! 🙂

We share a vehicle quite a bit so grocery trips can be farther apart than I like, I try to get creative and have leftovers (lol) or make new creations from whatever isn’t being used like your fish sticks lol

  4. I agree with everyone else, we too do a lot of leftovers as well. I just try to figure a way to make it a little more creative. Sometimes I can find a few cooking blogs that may have some cool recipes with some of the items I may have in my cupboard and I’ll try those.

  5. Since I have a well stocked pantry and extra freezer in the garage there’s always something that we can prepare in a pinch. I’ve gone a month without grocery shopping (except for fresh fruit and some veggies) and I love that we have the extra storage to do so.

  6. LOL, raiding my pantry although that’s pretty empty right now.
