A few days ago, we had dinner with couple we hadn’t seen in a long time. They’ve been married for 3 years or so, and still delight in telling people the story of how they met.  As their eyes sparkled, they shared how their first “date” ended up being at a church service.  The husband commented that he’d only been attending that church for a short time, and that he felt that God led him there.  The wife, my friend, was invited there by an acquaintance of her parents.  Little did they know that the first meeting would lead to such a wonderful future!

Not So Far Away book review #giveaway

In the story Not So Far Away by Deborah Pierson Dill, Laurel had a hard time envisioning a loving marriage like the one my friends share.  The domestic violence in the story was terrible; be warned if that will bother you.  My big concern was for Laurel’s children.  I kept thinking about their need to have a positive male role model in their lives, someone who would show them how to truly treat a woman well.  This romance novel might seem like just the opposite at first, but hang in there!

A deeper message in Not So Far Away is the hard truth of faith.  Believing and trusting are two different things.  I admired Laurel’s faith, and wanted to believe that everything was going to work out for her, but her situation just seemed so insurmountable.  Also, I couldn’t imagine how she could remain in such a painful relationship for so long.  My heart broke for her sons time and again.
