It’s the time to be telling ghost stories. If you’re looking for some good spooky stories to read, check out Very Superstitious: Myths, Legends and Tales of Superstition (Charity Anthology Dark Tales Collection).  This compilation of short stories is perfect for a Friday evening spent huddled under a blanket with a flashlight to give you some sense of peace. The stories in this collection aren’t all scary. In fact, some of them are just brainteasers. Normally short stories don’t appeal to me because I don’t feel like I get to know the characters very well. In this case, however, the stories are very well-rounded so that I felt like I had enough information to enjoy the plot of each tale.

Whenever we travel, I usually purchase a book of local ghostlore as a souvenir. It’s something I’ve done for years and have really enjoyed learning about the legends of each old city we visit. From Charleston to Savannah to San Antonio, I’ve picked up many books. Something I liked about Very Superstitious was the fact that some of the stories are based on true legends that I hadn’t heard before. Also, most of the stories weren’t very predictable which is also a bonus. My favorite was the clever last story in the collection. It’s something I’d love to read to my students to help them understand the way that legends and myths develop over time.

The one thing I didn’t like in this collection was the story entitled “The Road Home.” While the story itself was wonderful, there were some obscenities thrown in that were completely unnecessary. For this reason, I wouldn’t recommend the book to young children. Without those words, this would be a perfect book for middle schoolers and up.
