Must Love Otters by Eliza Gordon

Hollie Porter is the chairwoman of Generation Disillusioned: at twenty-five years old, she’s saddled with a job she hates, a boyfriend who’s all wrong for her, and a vexing inability to say no. She’s already near her breaking point, so when one caller too many kicks the bucket during Hollie’s 911 shift, she cashes in the Sweethearts’ Spa & Stay gift certificate from her dad and heads to Revelation Cove, British Columbia. One caveat: she’s going solo. Any sweethearts will have to be found on site.Hollie hopes to find her beloved otters in the wilds of the Great White North, but instead she’s providing comic relief for staff and guests alike. Even Concierge Ryan, a former NHL star with bad knees and broken dreams, can’t stop her from stumbling from one (mis)adventure to another. Just when Hollie starts to think that a change of venue doesn’t mean a change in circumstances, the island works its charm and she starts to think she might have found the rejuvenation she so desperately desires. But then an uninvited guest crashes the party, forcing her to step out of the discomfort zone where she dwells and save the day … and maybe even herself in the process.

Fans of Bridget Jones — take note.  This is a book you’ve gotta read!!  I’ve been missing my friend Bridget.  Meet Hollie Porter, the girl who could have been Bridget’s sister. In Must Love Otters, Hollie could be lip-syncing “All By Myself” and I would not have blinked an eye. The book rings true for single women everywhere, except most single women don’t have a dad who will buy them a long weekend for 2 at a luxury Canadian resort. In any case, Hollie goes (sans-boyfriend) and gets more than one revelation while she’s there. Must Love Otters was hilarious in a way that usually only comes from a night out with the girlfriends.  Who else will tell you that she got her nips burned by some hot sauce in a night of role play gone wrong?

Normally bad language in a book really puts me off, but it was sporadic enough in this book that I could ignore it for the most part.  What I really loved was Hollie’s stream-of-consciousness dialogue with herself.  She’s witty, quick on her feet, and just a fun gal to hang out with.  You’ll find yourself rooting for her to win the gold.At the end of Must Love Otters, I cried.  Real tears of happiness and satisfaction that only comes at the end of a great book.  I also gave my husband a great big hug because he deserves it for putting up with me.  After all, any guy can be….well, a guy.  It takes a really great guy to make a man.

Thanks to Chapter By Chapter Tours for letting me participate in this book tour.
