Living far away from my mother means that we don’t usually get to spend Mother’s Day together.  We try to see each other during the year, but school schedules make it difficult to travel on Sundays in May!  Mother’s Day is a treat for me; I usually spend it at home with my husband and children.  To make sure my mom enjoys her day, too, I send her a gift and call her on that day.  I’ve often said here on the blog that Mother’s Day is a time to celebrate all women in our lives — not just mothers — so consider any special women in your lives when planning your Mother’s Day at home!  Here are some simple Mother’s Day tips for kids and significant others.

It’s important to carefully consider the type of activities you want to do on Mother’s Day.  Express these wishes to your family!  My husband always wants to go on a Mother’s Day hike through the woods.  That’s really fun most days, and I love doing that with the family….but on Mother’s Day, I’d really love nothing more than to take an uninterrupted nap.  Yes, I consider napping an activity.

Sometimes we spend the whole weekend doing my wishlist activities, which is so fun!  On those days, we usually go to yard sales on Saturday morning.  I give the kids a couple of dollars and they inevitably find the perfect gift to share with me on Sunday. It’s a good way to teach them how to stretch their money while also providing them the chance to exercise their giving muscles.

If you’re trying to make Mother’s Day special for someone else, ask that woman what she would like to do on her day.  Chances are, she’ll have an activity in mind!  Whether it’s a massage, a pedicure, or a chance to read a book, you’ll be making her day more special by showing that you care about what activities she wants to enjoy.

Like many families, the Savings in Seconds crew really bonds over food.  Mother’s Day is no different!  I’m lucky because Mr. Savingsinseconds does a great job preparing some of my favorite meals.  You can make a Mother’s Day  dinner at home with just a few special touches.

First, start with a dish that you know is a winner…and one that you can prepare.   We have a local specialty market that offers the most decadent desserts, delicious fruits and vegetables, and the best meat in town.  While it’s pricey, it’s worth every penny for a special Mother’s Day meal!

On the other hand, if the thought of shopping for this type of meal intimidates you, consider ordering from an online meal kit service.  These meals come pre-measured, pre-washed, and with full instructions.  It’s much more simple to create a tantalizing meal right at home when all the prep work has been done for you!  The benefit of this, too, is that you can often select from a variety of menu options.  This makes it less stressful than standing in the store, trying to improvise when you can’t find a specific ingredient.  You can also cater to special dietary needs this way.

Don’t forget to set the table for a lovely dinner, too.  Add some candles, a bouquet or centerpiece, and something special for Mom.  A lovely but simple flower at her place setting is a nice touch.  Turn on some music, too!

Now, don’t forget that we’re also thinking about the moms who live far away from us.  You can still gift your faraway mom with a lovely Mother’s Day dinner by giving her a gift card, order some specialty steaks for her, or arrange for a delivery service to bring take-out to her.  What a wonderful gift from a loving child!

Of course, most of us think of gifts when it comes to Mother’s Day.  After all, it’s a traditional way to show we care!  When it comes to gift-giving, how do you determine the best gift to purchase for your Mother’s Day recipient?

It’s helpful to generate a list all year long whenever you talk with, or shop with, your special person.  I keep a note going on my phone where I can jot reminders of things my mom tells me she likes or needs.  That way, when the time comes to purchase something for her, I know she will enjoy it.  For example, my mom loves high-end mascara but would never spend that money on herself!  Instead of giving her a gift certificate (knowing that she wouldn’t use it because just seeing the cost of a prestige brand would send her over the edge) I order her enough mascara to keep her stocked for several months.  By tagging the order as a gift, she never sees how much it costs.  Since my mom doesn’t shop online, this is a simple way to treat her to a product she’d never purchase for herself.

Now that they’re old enough to independently create art, I often ask my kids to make something special for me for Mother’s Day.  They both love to sketch, and I treasure their drawings and paintings far more than anything that could be purchased at the store.  This also communicates to my children that their skills and gifts are valued.

Finally, you might just need to ask your special lady if there’s something she would really like to have.  Her simple request might surprise you!  Instead of purchasing new jewelry, she might want to have her favorite pieces cleaned.  Rather than buying clothes for her, offer to watch the kids so she can have a couple of hours to choose a new pair of shoes online.  She probably has a request in her mind, but puts the needs of others first.  After all, that’s what mothers tend to do!

I hope these simple solutions help your favorite mama to really enjoy her Mother’s Day at home!
