There have been times of uncertainty in my life, but motherhood was probably the height of that misgiving.  I wasn’t one of those women who always knew she wanted to be a mother.  It was a spark that grew into a flame within my heart.  Perhaps that made my children even more precious to me — the realization that I wanted to be a mom more than I wanted anything else in my life.   The roller coaster ticked upward again, though, as my pregnancies were difficult and I learned how to care for these tiny people who depended on me for survival.  When I read The Mother Letters by Amber C. Haines and Seth Haines, my heart fluttered at the reminders of those precarious days of infancy, toddlerhood, and beyond.

The Mother Letters

The Mother Letters is small enough to enjoy in an afternoon.  A padded hardcover makes it suitable for gift-giving.  Also, the artwork and photography contained in these pages is sure to bring a smile.   It inspired me to write my own Mother Letter in response to the book.

Dear Mother,

Your job is more demanding, challenging, and formidable than any other. Caring for this small person will require all of your heart and more.  You’ll spend hours on your knees, up to your elbows in Legos, upchucked lunch, and prayer requests.  You’ll read countless books, sing innumerable songs, and chuckle at the limitless antics of your little ones.  In the raising of this baby, you’ll depend on the kindness of others.  Caregivers, teachers, and family members will be held in your heart because of their love for your child.

In all of this, mother, don’t neglect the adults in your life.  Keep the flame alive with your spouse.  Take the time to honor your parents, and visit your extended family.  My family lives a day’s drive away, and it’s an adventure when we travel to spend time with them.  The memories you’ll make when you do this can’t be measured. Your children will learn a sense of connection with their people, and will learn how to relate to others.

Above all, keep your faith alive.  You’ll need God more than ever as you travel this path of motherhood.  Enrich your own spiritual life by joining a mother’s group.  Consider mentoring a young mother as you grow in your own maternal skills.  Cherish these moments, mama, because they are making you a stronger person.

Love,

A Friend

The Mother Letters

by Amber C. Haines and Seth Haines

We are all in this together.

Mothering isn’t easy. Some days you second-guess every decision. Some nights you fall into bed in a haze of exhaustion. Yet even if you feel alone in the struggle, there are mothers who have been there–right where you are now–and they want you to know you are not alone. That’s where The Mother Letters comes in.

The Mother Letters began as a gift of encouragement. After Amber Haines had given birth to three boys in three years, her husband Seth realized the day-to-day details and drama of child rearing were overwhelming her. He secretly began collecting letters from other mothers across the world and gave these “mother letters” to her as a gift.

Amber and Seth have compiled these wise, honest, and sometimes hilarious letters into a beautiful book of hope and encouragement for moms everywhere. Their desire is that these words speak to you as they did to Amber, and that you hear “Me too. We can do this.”
