Put it in a Mason jar and I’m sure to love it. Put a Mason jar on the cover and I’m bound to read it. CALL IT The Mason Jar and there’s no doubt – it’ll be a favorite.
The Mason Jar book review - savingsinseconds.com
Jars have long been a staple in my life. Coins, trinkets, and fireflies all made happy homes in the jars of my childhood. As a newlywed, my husband and I invested in a few jars to use as glasses. Even now, I use Mason jars to decorate and organize (if you could call it that) my home. So when The Mason Jar came across my inbox?

Cross my fingers.

If one could ignore the modern mentions of Kindles and other such conveniences, it would be easy to imagine this story taking place in the 1940’s. The characters are strong and classic.  I could envision Tennessee boy Clayton wearing sturdy Bonobos jeans while sitting on a park bench under the fall trees.  Such memories of days gone by!  Sometimes choppy and hard to follow, the story reads more like a memoir than a romantic story. Sprinkled throughout the musings are wonderful quotes.  An assortment of them are printed on the opening pages, but I found myself wanting to highlight my own favorites.  Here’s one that I loved:

We know that if we love and live, then we can walk, run, and fly.

But if we love and lose, we fall and wonder  if crawling will ever be possible again.

~James Russell Lingerfelt, The Mason Jar

Would I have followed in Eden’s footsteps?  Probably not. I was frustrated with her family for expecting too much.  My heart broke for Finn who never really had the closure he needed.  Knowing that I’m not the same person I was in college, it’s hard for me to imagine myself clinging to lost loves.  However, that’s probably because I ended up with my one true love!  The Mason Jar becomes a symbol for the constants in our lives.  An appreciation for our roots, the people who support us, and for true love that never really goes away.

James Russell Lingerfelt‘s debut novel, The Mason Jar, is hot-off-the-press and causing quite the buzz. It’s even been optioned for a feature film and is in pre-production.

  1. My mom and I made our own jam and such in mason jars when I was a kid. I can remember it well. I never really learned how to do it myself so I haven’t been able to teach my kids the skill. This sounds like a great read.

  2. I know I was immediately intrigued by the title and cover. Sounds like a good read.
