In my early teen years, I spent my pocket money on teeny-bopper magazines.  Tiger Beat, anyone?   For a while, I looked back on those days and thought I’d wasted my money and time.  However, I was mistaken.  Reading magazines was influential to my development as a reader. That’s why I make sure my children and students have magazines to read on a regular basis.

There are lots of reasons to consider getting a magazine subscription for young readers.   Magazines provide an excellent chance for children to recognize text features.  These are concepts like the caption below a photo, sidebar information, and using the table of contents.  Since magazines are generally considered nonfiction, your child will practice reading articles for information.  Articles in magazines are typically shorter and more visually appealing than a book.  Because of this, I highly recommend magazines for struggling readers.  If you have a child who resists the opportunity to read, a magazine article doesn’t really seem like reading!  There’s something to be said for having a personal subscription to a favorite mag.  Getting fun mail is always a bonus, but it also fosters a sense of ownership.  When you think about magazines for kids, you might only come up with Highlights.  However, there are so many other great children’s magazines out there.  Here are a few ideas.

Is there a Frozen fan on your Christmas list? Check out this deal on the new Frozen magazine — a one-year subscription is just $15.  The cover is beautiful with eye-catching graphics and favorite characters.  I love that there’s a chance to win displayed right on the front.  The offer is listed under Washington DC deals.  Thanks to reader Cindi for the tip!

If your child loves to watch Food Network and dreams of being on Cupcake Wars someday, why not appeal to that interest?   Following a recipe is a great way to help children practice math skills and learn to follow step-by-step instructions.  YUM for Kids is $14.95 for new subscribers.

Frozen….I didn’t know. I got my granddaughter Princesses but she would love this. Last year I did National Geographic for kids. This year my grandson is getting Lego. Magazines give the kids mail and fun activities all year long. Plus, with many choices, you can find one kidsw ill enjoy.

  2. What a truly insightful and unique perspective! My kids were excellent and avid readers but you make some very strong points in this article which make complete sense both logically and via the emotional connection to reading! Makes me want to go subscribe to a magazine myself right now! In fact, I always complain my husband does not read enough and just yesterday he did in fact ask me for an American Woodworking magazine if I came across any deals … so I am going to get him a sub today after reading this haha although your article was aimed at kids – its good for husbands too 🙂

  3. We get educational magazines here. My daughter loves Zoobooks!

  4. I do this all the time for my nieces and nephews – I consider it the gift that keeps on giving since they get something either 6 0r 12 times a year. Plus I think reading is the greatest gift you can give a child

  5. I know that my boys would have lived and died for the Lego magazine. The only problem with my boys is they all wanted their own and we often made them share. It was painful.

My daughter loves grabbingu magazines when I’m done with them and going through them. And she’s got a subscription to highlife, but I think she’d love these even more. Especially Frozen and the Lego ones.
