My daughter recently attended her first teen convention. She had an absolutely amazing trip with our church, and when she came home I could see the growth in her spiritual self.  As I perused the BookLook available titles for January, she saw this lovely new devotional and asked me if I’d get it for her.  That, in itself, is a big step! 

Faithgirlz is a trustworthy brand for Christian teens, so I knew the Whatever is Lovely devotional would represent wholesome values.  I was not disappointed!   The 90 messages cover emotions, truth, purity, finding peace, and more.  Relevant verses are included, and girls have room for reflection in each devotion.  It’s short enough to read before breakfast, yet meaningful in quality.  I appreciate that there are 90 days instead of 30.  This can, perhaps, help to make such meditation a habit.

The only thing I’d change about the Whatever Is Lovely devotional is the cover.  I’m not a big fan of heart-embellished decor, and this cover makes me think it’s for little-ish kids. This is definitely meant for teens, as some grown-up topics are mentioned.  Parents, don’t shy away from those topics.  It’s important to keep those lines of communication open as teens mature, so that they feel comfortable asking where you stand.  Don’t make the mistake of thinking that your teen would never try something…..because that’s just asking for trouble!  Be open, honest, and trustworthy — just as you’d want your child to be.  A devotional like Whatever Is Lovely provides an added layer of support to a child’s growth in faith.

I put this on my daughter’s nightstand after I read some of the devotional entries.  I can’t wait to see what she thinks of it!  After all, that’s what’s really important.
