There was a time when young adult books were only about teen love. I’m so glad that era is a bygone. These days, the young adult genre encompasses paranormal, dystopian, sci-fi, and sometimes dabbles in all of these. Emily’s Heart by Natalie Wright is a good example of a book that reaches fans of all these spectrums.

This is the third book in the popular Akasha Chronicles. The first two books, Emily’s House and Emily’s Trial, establish important details that a reader will have to muddle through without this prior knowledge. For this reason, it’s a good idea to bone up on the first two books before trying to tackle Emily’s Heart.

I super loved that Emily is such a strong female central character. She is tough as nails and makes superheroes look like fuzzy stuffed animals. Emily is also a good problem solver. She anticipates problems and explains her thought process as she comes to a solution. This is such a wonderful skill for middle grades to learn; coming to it through a book is a great model.

Even with the heart of a warrior, Emily has the heart of a woman. Her true love for Jake is almost tangible. With this love, they endeavor to defeat darkness. While this all sounds heavy, author Natalie Wright makes the book feel light and sometimes funny through her lilting words. I thoroughly enjoyed Emily’s Heart and am excited to share it with you as part of this tour.

Emily wants nothing more than to feel the soft kiss of her one true love, but he won’t even speak to her. Her first crush is still quite dead and her best friend remains a prisoner in the dark god’s house of nightmares. A growing legion of black-eyed shadow people, devoid of conscience, roam the streets. Emily needs help now more than ever, but redemption seems far off indeed as she faces the expanding darkness alone. Emily will need an army of her own if she is to save the world from being taken over by pure evil.

But will a small band of Lucent geeks and freaks be enough to s
