Let me take a few breaths. Love Letters to the Dead is the kind of book that reminds me why I became a teacher. Silent pain and grief are almost more insidious than outward acting out. Laurel misses her sister and feels like she has no one to turn to, so she resorts to writing to dead celebrities. At first it’s kind of creepy because she realizes they’re dead, acknowledges the emptiness of writing to someone who cannot know she exists, but she perseveres. Soon Laurel starts to open up like a rosebud about to lose its petals. As I read on, my heart broke for her.  It reminded me that the students who sit in my class have similar pain, secret grief that they don’t feel that they can share.  It reminded me to show compassion and kindness at all times.

The frank, candid view into a teenager’s heart was painful to observe.  This is the book that my students have been waiting for.  I can’t wait to share it with them!  I’m really surprised that this is the author’s debut novel.  The depth of emotion is so deep that it’s almost as if this seasoned writer has been given a window to my soul.  I look forward to reading more by Ava Dellaira.

This sounds like a good book for teenagers. I believe they can relate their grieving, sadness, pain to this book . It would be helpful

I agree a wonderful book for teens and those struggling to find their voice. Often it is what people aren’t saying. We have to look beyond behavior and really listen. Don’t blow off a How are you? Whether child, adult, or teen…say it and listen.

It sounds like a great reminder to show kindness to others, but it might make me feel really sad.
