Disclosure: I received this book to review. Opinions shared are mine.

Many parents have to teach their children the difference between tattling and informing.  Kids do need to learn when a problem is bigger than they can handle; that’s when a parent is needed to step in to help solve it.  That’s how I felt as I read Lindsey Love and Intrigue.  As cryptic text messages plagued Lindsey’s phone, and dangerous incidents presented real peril, Lindsey didn’t let her parents in on the news.  She didn’t realize the gravity of her situation, and it bothered me to no end!  It probably didn’t help that I read this right around Halloween, when my instincts for all things creepy seems to be on high alert.  At least there were candied walnuts for Thanksgiving dinner!   Lindsey: Love and Intrigue book tour - savingsinseconds.com

The story strongly builds on young love throughout most of the book.   Lindsey fell hard for Chris, must like Bella and Edward.  This type of fall-hard-and-fast romance is hard for me to swallow, especially with teens.  It worries me to think that my daughter might expect her first love to be that way; while it would be wonderful for her to experience such a deep connection with someone, I really want her to live a bit of her life before settling down with someone.   I also don’t want her to live in fear of losing a boyfriend, or be tempted to change her values to avoid a breakup.   A smoldering smile shouldn’t be the end of her common sense. These concerns worried me with Lindsey, too, and I definitely wanted her parents to be more of a grounding presence in her life.

Now, if I take off the mom hat and become a YA reader only, then Lindsey Love and Intrigue would be the world I’d want to live in!  Locker love galore, combined with cute boys and snowmobiles….it’s a teenager’s paradise.  The book is nearly 400 pages long, so it’s hearty enough to take up an entire weekend with high school drama.  The beginning of the book reads more like Lindsey’s journal than a novel.   The pages don’t start with “Dear Diary,” but the tone is the same.  It made me reflect on similar memories from the 1990’s when I was in high school…..did he just look at me across the chemistry classroom?  Or, will that guy ask me to dance tonight at homecoming?   You, too, can relive high school moments through Lindsey Love and Intrigue.

About the book:
Fifteen-year-old Lindsey Morgan Brooks is still considered the new kid in the small town of Emit, Michigan. Both of her parents are lawyers, but her father has built his reputation prosecuting some of the worst criminals in New York and Chicago. Now, as a high school junior, she is trying to choose her own path. Lindsey feels the demands and pressure from school, gymnastics, and her parents as she battles insecurities to build friendships while steering clear of the many land mines in high school-such as the group of popular girls she has dubbed the “Fab Five” Busy with activities and consumed with thoughts of her secret crush, Chris, she takes little notice of what’s happening around her. She gets a flat tire, gets caught with the lights-out and starts receiving strange text messages-things she assumes are just high school pranks gone too far. Her father wants her to be able to handle herself, so she should be able to handle this. But while she steals a glimpse at Chris, who is watching her?

  1. The romance pace didn’t bother me, I guess because they’d known each other awhile. What was the hardest for me was that Lindsey was so hard on herself. Like she didn’t feel worthy. I guess that made me a little sad. But I think she’s growing as a character and that’s what really matters.
