Finding educational activities that have an engaging appeal is easy when you shop with Kidable Adventures.  Check out their new Smarties box!

My son went into kindergarten knowing the basics.  He could recite the alphabet, colors, most shapes, and count to 20.  He really didn’t have an interest in reading books, though he felt frustration because he couldn’t read.  We receive lots of fun reading material on a regular basis but it never really caught his attention.  Things really changed with kindergarten.  He is suddenly thrilled to practice writing his full name.  He loves to count to 100.  When his teacher asks him to work on something at home, he takes it seriously.  This period is what teachers call the “window of opportunity” or the “teachable moment.”  When a child is intrinsically motivated to learn, that’s the time to offer lots of engaging, high-quality materials to encourage inquiry!  When I came upon the Little Thinker Box, I knew it would catch his interest.

Color me impressed with this box of 8 separate learning lessons!  As a teacher, I can attest to the fact that it would take hours to develop these ready-to-go activities.  The month is $28 (with free shipping) and you can get a discount for purchasing additional months at one time.  Each mini-lesson is separately packaged with the necessary materials.  For those who feel intimidated by “teaching” these activities, never fear.  There’s an instruction sheet that categorizes each activity into five units.   You’ll look smooth as silk when pulling out each one!

Here’s an example of just one of the lessons in the Little Thinker Box.  This package of cards and links would keep my son busy for an entire week!  The required skills address concepts such as pattern organization, fine motor skills, and sorting. I’d probably challenge him to complete one of the cards each day, starting with one of the easier tasks then progressing to a more difficult one.  Once you become accustomed to working with your child, you’ll learn to look for those “teachable moments” I mentioned.  You might ask questions such as, how many of these links would fit inside a paper tube?  Will these links float or sink in a cup of water?  Can we stack the links?  I’ll bet you can come up with a few of your own right now!

I would suggest not letting your child watch you open this box.  Although it’s exciting to see all of the “games” at once, you’ll get more mileage out of them when spreading the activities out over the course of a few days or even weeks.    You could separate the activities and use them as stocking stuffers or small gifts.  Send the box along with Grandma to help her keep the kids entertained for the weekend.  Tuck one of the bags in your purse to help your kids wait at a restaurant.  Think of all the ways you could use these activities! The Little Thinker Smarties box is a great subscription for kids.  Order yours now.

I wish there were an age range on these, or more than one age group being offered. Maybe it was the mobile site, but I couldn’t get a good feel about what was beinged offered.

    • Jess, they are activities geared toward Pre-K and Kindergarden age children. Ages 4 and 5 would probably benefit best, although I know some who are younger (3 years?) who would love them, too. I think you’d have to be careful, though, because some of the parts are quite small and could be choking hazards.
