Looking for a great beach read? Check out the first installment of the Kitty Hawk Flying Detective Agency series. The main character, Kitty, is a teenage pilot with a thirst for adventure and certain proclivity for trouble. In the first book, Kitty Hawk and the Curse of the Yukon Gold, we get to know Kitty as she embarks on her first great journey.
There are several reasons that make this a perfect beach book. First, the chapters are short and easy to read. In each 2 or 3 page chapter, we get to see a tiny layer of what makes Kitty such a feisty girl. The story crosses much geography, including a local beach where Kitty learns to surf. Finally, the story has an air of mystery that is just irresistible without being too cumbersome.
There seems to be some historical research embedded within this book, but I wasn’t familiar with the history of the region. There are graphics featured on several related pages, including a map. The book is ready to be integrated into a reading curriculum!
