Let’s say you wanted to read a historical fiction book. You want one that’s full of action, suspense, and maybe a little romance. You’d like to gnaw on that book for a while, so as to get your money’s worth.  The book you’re looking for would be Keepers of the Covenant.

The book is the literary equivalent of an everlasting gobstopper. It really could have been split up into three separate stories because there are three distinct parts, in my opinion.   I had a hard time following some parts, possibly because of the sheer length of the novel.  There are several storylines intertwined throughout the book; one can’t help but fall in love with the characters.  My favorite was Ezra.  He’s a figure from the Old Testament who has always slipped by me.  Ezra and I never really bonded.  I loved getting to know a little of his history as it related to the Jewish exile.

There was a bit of conflict between some of the modern terms used in the book and the historical setting.  For example, there’s a reference to stress-induced childbirth. While I have no doubt that plundering would cause a full-term woman some serious contractions, I wondered if they actually used the word “stress.”  Also, when describing the biblical law mandating that a widow must marry her unwed brother-in-law, two women describe the situation as “weird.”  Although I would normally appreciate the slang terms in a novel, they seemed out of place in Keepers of the Covenant.

The religious background of the Jewish return to Jerusalem is fascinating.  Before reading Austin’s books, I never really thought about the emotional impact that exile would create for those who felt so tied to the holy city.  If you’re looking for a book that will take you right to the heart of Christian history, check out Keepers of the Covenant.

Lynn Austin is back with the next book in The Restoration Chronicles series, Keepers of the Covenant. Austin weaves together the struggles and stories of both Jews and Gentiles, creating a tapestry of faith and doubt, love and loss.
